Firstly, great comparison chart, really helped me to compare all the costs.

Now I see why you would exclude the telephone-line rental because *most* people will have it although there are times when you don't have a Telkom line and that cost does come into the calculation.

For example, I am renting my flat and I don't really need a telkom line (i have a cellphone) so that extra line cost does affect someone like me.

And when you take extra R93, it makes iBurst, for me that is, the more affordable broadband solution.
 
I also think the basic line rental should be taken into account. There is no compelling reason to have a land line these days and many people opt not to incur the additional expense.
 
Hey Gatecrasher, is that RWIN value in your sig really working better than the "usual" 255000 (or thereabouts) for you?

Do you recomend anyone should give it a try?

And Halicon, where do you find full newest movies like Corpse Bribe to download off the internet, besides torrents? Just wondering if you have some great source.

Well thats what gave the incredible speed.
You've probably downloaded that file before or it's a bug in Firefox.

If you go to:

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

and bring up the RWIN topic from the dropdown box, there is a cross table showing recommended RWIN sizes given connection speed and latency.

With RWIN>64K, you need window scaling on and timestamping on, which does add some overhead, but could increase speed provided there is little or no packet error. If there are packet errors, a large RWIN will slow down transfers far more than with smaller RWIN sizes, because RWIN bytes of data have to be resent.

My setting is a compromise to give me the largest sub 64K even multiple of the MSS (48 x 1312) to avoid windowscaling and timestamping, while also allowing a reasonable amount of data to be transfered before an ack is required.

It works well for me.

So do some speed tests on your current setting. Change it (DrTCP is best). Remember to turn windowscaling and timestamps off. See if you get any improvements. If not, you can always set everything back the way it was.

for the morons who never understood this post... i was showing how you can fake highspeeds with firefox. simply drag a file into firefox and it will want to 'download' that file.

so effectively all you are seeing is local transfer rate.
 
Oh if your talking about me halicon, I was just wondering were you get those latest movies and things, I know you werent actually downloading them, but you can see they come off the internet from those file names.

heh heh... not talking about you ekhaatvensters... didnt even notice your comment until you mentioned it. i just couldnt figure out all the pm's i got from people asking about a great place to get movies... until i remembered the post i made with the screenshot...

besides what movie are you talking about ;)
 
Well whatever you were busy "downloading" in that screen shot, I think it was called Corpse Bride or Corpse Bribre. The point is that it was a 2005 movie and a good quality rip, well judgind from the file name it came from a team or rippers that usually put good qality stuff on the net.

I was just wondering where you download movies and stuff from as i've been looking for a better place than p2p, torrents, and bad megaupload, rapidshare, turboupload etc. stuff.

Not that its all that important with a 3gig cap or a 64kb connection.
 
Proxy = downloads **** for you before you need it to allow open international for everybody else.

In rare instances the proxy will finish downloading before you do, and because it's their local network, they COULD have sent it to you at that blistering speed.

Either that or you were drunk, seeing as you were up on 2am that day...
 
Hi All

As a reseller of a number of services including MyWireless and ADSL I can tell you that we have been most impressed with IBurst. They had their teething problems but lately we have seen a number of clients where they get 500 to 800 kbps and we have screenshots where we get 1.3Mbps and even one site where we did a number of tests (because we couldn't believe it) where speeds were over 2mbps!! However, I doubt the claim of anything much more than that. Remember on some speed tests, if you have downloaded the file and you repeat the test, you get the file from cache which results in AMAZING speeds. These are not genuine speeds. As one of the above posts mentioned, IBurst is great PROVIDED your signal is good. If signal is poor, rather look elsewher or wait a few weeks/months for a closer tower...

Hmmnn, this is some very good info on iBurst use from another region. Right now, my business associate has the 128K package from Africa Online for Ksh 9300 per month. But he doesn't even get close to that speed. OTOH, the service was just rolled out here and they only have 1 tower handling Nairobi. I assume it's much more ubiquitous in SA -- correct??

in your orginal 'screenshot' your speed was reflecting something like 10MB/s which is impossile with current iburst technology. if you drag a large file into firefox and 'download' it, it emulates a download (as was shown in my screenshot). all your screenshot showed was that you had lousy hard drive speeds.
