Hi - Having smtp problems - its very very slow.Http and pop is fast and smtp is very slow.Getting Timeouts etc.I was wandering if anybody knows of good smtp montoring tool ,so i can isolate this strange problem.? Ive checked Firewalls,MTU, blah blah etc.Nothing works

Thanks

Slighty off topic but you don't need to use ibursts smtp server anymore if you don't need it - i.e. if you have your own hosted mail server somewhere or even gmail account.

If you can't come right with your own e-mail server, try these ip's as the smtp server: 196.46.70.2 or 196.30.31.197.

Hope this helps

Hi , unforunately those SMTP ips you gave me dont work.Guess iam going to try and download an SMTP Diagnostic proggie to try isolate the program.Iam suspecting sometime with the Pinetown Tower causing this

Do you no longer need to ask them to allow you to use an alternative smtp?

Not to sure about that Jongi, but I didn't when I signed up last month. If you an existing user still using iburst smtp, I think you have to ask them.

Morning all

You are still required to use the iburst smtp. In cases where an external smtp is required please mail motivtion and external smtp detail through to us for evaluation and opening.

Iam not intrested in using a another SMTP Server. At my work we run a few smtp servers however policy doesnt allow for clients to relay thru these servers.Lets not shy away from the real problem.I just want iBurst's SMTP Server to work and be reliable. Its as simple as that

Iam not sure if the are related to the Iburst SMTP Server or the connection to that server.I know last week there were Routing problems on the Verizon Network (iBurst,UUNET).Maybe that could have been one of the reasons.I guess the only ppl that can really tell us are the iBurst ppl themselves.

I contacted them, spoke to Charlton Morris, and he said it would be no problem. Then I sent him the IAfrica SMTP address and a week later I got a reply saying that IAfrica and MWeb do not allow relaying! I did not ask for relaying, I simply want to use my own IAfrica SMTP server in the same way that I use the IAfrica POP server. If anything, then using the WBS SMTP server seems to my mind to be "relaying". I simply need the shortest and quickest route to send and receive mail. I am sure going via WBS's server does not mean it is shorter or quicker. Or am I missing the point?

Here's the communication with them:

Hi there

I contacted the HelpDesk on Thursday 21:20 to ask to use my e-mail ISP's (IAfrica) SMTP server for outgoing mail. I have had problems getting mail sent on Thursday 13 April but had no problems receiving mail. My username with iBurst is andrieso. I am using the address 196.46.70.2 for the moment. The SMTP server to be used as from Tuesday is smtp-iafrica.com.

Best regards

Andries Oberholzer

Their response:

Hi there

Unfortunately, iafrica/Mweb do not permit relaying mail through their servers from foreign network connections

Thanks alot

regards Charlton

My response:

Charlton

But I am an Iafrica client. I have been with Iafrica /MWeb since 1999. I already use their POP server (pop01.iafrica.com) and have done so for seven years. All I want is to be able to use the SMTP server jhb-smtp.iafrica.com instead of smtp.wbs.co.za. In essence I want my internet connection through iBurst and my e-mail facilities come from MWeb. Already, because I no longer use their dialup they offered me a discout - from R149.00 to R70.00 per month.

Andries

What does one do now?

But if you use Iafrica/MWEB for outgoing then you ARE relaying. When you send mail it goes from your PC to your ISP (Iburst) who relays it to the SMTP server, who then send it on to your recipients. Using Iburst's SMTP, the mail wouldn't have to be relayed, it could be sent directly to its destination.

What Charlton Morris is saying is that MWEB/IAfrica will not accept mail being relayed via their SMTP server. You have to be logged into MWEB/IAfrica's network in order to use their SMTP server. That's what he is saying, whether it is true or not is another matter. I would get back to MWEB and ask them whether you can indeed use their SMTP server via a non-MWEB ISP. They may only allow POP3 access to avoid the possibility of their servers being used to relay SPAM etc.

OK, I see your approach and it makes sense. Anyway, as someone else said as well, as long as the WBS SMTP works, there won't be any problems. But a while ago no-one I sent mail to, got it. That's where I have an issue.

tbf I have never had someone not receive an e-mail I've sent. So I guess I am not yet complaining.

How do you check receipt? Not everyone sends read receipts. Do you phone to confirm receipt? I don't believe there is a way to be sure that "I have never had someone not receive an email I've sent." - unless you are only sending a couple per month.
