Iburst Sucks

I agree, however...

Hi there

I agree, but that is when it works! My only gripe is that damn fools at the call centre, when you report a fault they want to take you through MTU settings and LAN settings... Also, their response times to actually taking action and of course they have no proper redundancies in place.

But wow when it works it WORKS and it is a pleasure to use the service, better than any other ISP in the day for the moment, don't wanna speak too soon....

In general mine is fast stable 99% of the time, and the 1% is normally when they are playing around with the tower, but it would be interresting to see if an antenna makes any difference to my speed.

but not by much...

Hey MRH

Well wait until the towers are congested then it all equals out I think. However, the directional antenna made a huge improvement, better than the Yagi. Have a look at an earlier post from EHV and PM him see if he can supply you with the flat panel at that price.... I really dislike waiting for pages to turn on the net, one of my pet hates...

I think the Plumstead tower is becomming a little congested lately as before my speeds were quite a bit higher, but I'm not complaining as what I have now is still pretty good.

I do not have LOS of the tower as there are quite a few trees and buildings between the tower and my house.
I don't think EHV is in the business of supplying antennas, he just suggested where you should look for one.
Besides all I want to do is run a test to see if it improves the signal and speed, as there is no point in wasting cash if it makes no difference in my case.

You're lucky...

I'm on a new tower, and it seem the CBD suffers more issues, maybe due to the amount of users. I'd rather have slower speeds and have a continuous stable connection - no on second thoughts I want both stability and speed.:)

Your tower is bound to be more congested than mine will ever be since it's in a place where there would be more users.
I've had mine for just under 2yrs now and it has only lately started "slowing" down a bit.
But even during the daytime it's not much slower than it is at night.:D

That's good to know...

Well at least there are two towers in Town, however I think most users will eventually switch from IS's building, The Terraces to the Gardens Centre, hopefully iBurst will provide enough bandwidth to accommodate all.

For the moment however the Gardens tower is the better option of the two, I was pointing to the Terraces but speeds has dropped dramatically once the Gardens tower came online. I assume they removed the array that was pointing to the mountain side to focus on the CBD area...

I find that with any IT related issue (not just iBurst), that the techs will take you through the basic steps even though you explain to them you have already checked them.

Best not to assume your clients are fools...

I agree, it's like calling Microsoft’s call centre, only their basic support agents seldom speak proper English...

However, it is a good example, as they have the basic support agents and "engineers" so at least you can get your call passed on to an "engineer" who could resolve your issue quicker and they speak English as a first language, LOL.

This is why I say Telkom's speed test is inaccurate.

Cache was cleared…

I did clear the cache, if not it shows the max... I assume it is when the iBurst signal spikes, while doing a speed test?

Do you also experience a loss of connectivity every hour or so for a brief second, when your IP is renewed? I have a static IP and still experience this!

So who is going to delete all these unrelated threads?

No I do not experience any loss every hour and my IP does not change every hour, in fact I have in the past held an IP for the whole month.

I only change IP when/if the old IP "dies" or if I happen to get a "dead" IP after I change.
I rely on BWMeter for my bandwidth usage since the iBurst BW monitor only updates after you change IP.

sigh.. look at you guys, bickering over > 1mb speeds!

Micheal, does your connection really reset every hour? Even though you have a static IP, why you have paid for that.. well I hope you have a reason. Hosting that site off of it maby?

Thats Telkom speed test does seem insane, dont one of you guys want to do an international test this late some time, interesting to see if you can actually hit 1mb on international. Then again, I've even done that before on a multi-threaded download, so maby no point.
But late on saturday night is the absolute best time for Iburst speeds, so maby even 2mb is possible with such a good connection, what is your DB btw Micheal?

Int. Speed test...

Hi there EHV

Speed test

Not anywhere close to 1 Mbps, well EHV my friends in the States generally all have access speeds of 12 Mbps and higher - here we struggle to acheive 1.2 Mbps, what a joke, so yeah why should we have less - we pay more, just because we live in Dark Africa, nonsense.

As for the disconnections, part of my msg to iBurst support:

"I recently requested to have a static IP address 196.46.XX.XX, however since this has been implemented every hour or two it causes my connection to loose connectivity for a brief second as if my IP address is being renewed. This disrupts my downloads that is currently active, disconnects MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype and also any other web based connection that might be active and I have to sign in repeatedly to all these services.

Needless to say this is not only annoying, it is ravaging my available bandwidth.

Is there any work-around or could you disable the renewing of my IP address, if this is the cause. I have tried altering my router settings, i.e. set timeouts to a zero value without success. I have also changed my router settings not to specify my IP and DNS settings; however, this has had no effect. I have also tried doing without the router and connecting directly via the ethernet connection to the UTD, however the issue persist."

All my sites are hosted by www.Host4Africa.com (servers are based in Houston TX, USA - local servers not as stable, quicker international access for visitors & also dirt cheap), the static IP is required for connecting to some applications of my clients where I'm not able to use dynsdns or the like.

As for the DB it fluctuates, 70 -80

Interesting, thats a terrible problem there. If you can just find a work around for Dynamic DNS or something, you should rather save your self the R150 or so and cancel that static IP.

With that international speed, the thing is you can probably pull a download at around 1mb right now with multi-htreading, so it doesnt really matter what the speed tese says. But I have even got a higher speed than that on international speed tests..

Now what would be funny is if you ask for a 196.46.64.xxx IP and got a permanent non-working connection. Unless this problem has been sorted out yet.

Static IP

Well you wont believe this when I requested the IP from the iBurst Support Centre they gave me a JHB based one, of course it didn’t work, since IP's are area bound so they re-issued me with a CTN based IP.

...and the agent knew I was in Cape Town?

Before I neglect to inform you, Phoenix has an exclusive distribution agreement of the flat panel antenna with GRES, as per the MD of Phoenix .net cc

The 196.46.64.xxx "dead" IP range seems to be working for this past week so I guess they must have done something about it.;)
