iburst throttling capping?

been with iburst for a month now n i hit the cap in my first week. been on the "throttled" service since then n i have had no problems.

the modem has been on 24,7 for 2 weeks with msn, yahoo, skype, limewire, email all working perfect n the speed hovers round 70-90kb with 90-100% signal strength.

but most important to me is that it aint telkom :D

Been with iburst for a year and a half - since the last three months, the moment I hit my Cap, they kill me DEAD, no email, no web browsing nothing!!! I'm on the Primrose Tower through TP. I don't even get a 1k connection & I KNOW it's not this so called 'cap of death' as I'm running Linux.

Well you can just use a proxy to unshape any protocol you want. If you are looking for a solution.

The poster needs to get in touch with Shaun greem, send him a PM or ask to speak to someone who works at WBS besides the normal helpdesk staff. They should know what you are talking about.

P2P is ahped and does work, but VERY slowly. A proxy however gets me around 70kb on P2P.
I can use IRC and MSN, as well as all the other MSn type apps.
But im shure some stuff doesnt work too well.
I refuse to use a proxy! Besides that, my connection must be on 24x7 and accessible externally 24/7 as well, any protocol level problems that make a protocol unusable or unreliable are absolutely unacceptable for me at any time! If in SA people can't get an internet connectivity right, they should go and ask overseas for help!

it seems the iburst experience is very inconsistent! Some people say it works before and after the cap at full or alsmost full speed, extremely reliable etc etc, others complaining about whole lot of things, from being unusably slow after capped, to protocols not working. I suspect that I have been one of the unlucky ones, very possible, not my fault though!

I think in general it works fine after the cap. The death by cap is a problem but can be sorted out. The speed however is VERY consistent once capped (well it jumps around but its not less than what you expect.. ie. it doesnt slow down to a crawl.) because every connection can manage 64kb throughput. I belive the protocols dont work even when you are un-capped. Its a network policy type of problem. Or do these protocols you are talking about only stop working once capped?

The guy on linux, I dont see how that stops the death by cap. Had no idea it was a windows issue?? Am i missing something?

There are different versions as to why one gets this death by cap. A WBS techie that came to check our system told us that it's mainly a windows issue with windows using bandwidth for unnecessary data exchange which does not quite gel since it works fine with a 56k modem.
TP told us that once capped, your priority is at the back of the queue so you just have to wait until there's not much traffic going around before your data is finally trickled to you. This seems to be a more plausible explanation.
I've been capped many a time & still had the steady 64k connection. It has only been the last three months that this 'death by cap' has come into play.

My feeling is that they deliberately slow it down even more to force more cash out of their customers.

Good day all....

There is no restrictions on the bandwidth once you hit the cap. If you do experience Death By Cap please call me on 084-978-0790 so that we may arrange a site visit to sort out your problem. With a site visit we have been able to sort out all of these issues. We do not pick on certain users once the cap has been reached. This is not policy.

It is not a windows issue. It is a phenomenon which affects +- 20 users a month.

Once we visit site this problem is removed.

Please PM me your details or mail me on [email protected] to arrange the site visit.

Have a great day.

Cheers

I'm one of the lucky ones as well. No problems what sp ever before or after cap.
What I have noticed in all the posts is that people that gets zero or very little problems are people posting that they have very good signal. Maybe the other dudes don't have that a hot signal.

This is only an observation, maybe part of the problem, yes/no?

I dont have that great signal. Never 100%, usually between 70-90% when htere is activity. It can be worse during the day, around 3-4 lights, often 4-5 later on in the day.

I never have problems after the cap, but some problems in general occasionally, but I think thats just normal, Most (probably 90%+) of the time its perfect.

An interesting phenomena, that I'm picking up now is that although I'm uncapped at the moment, it is as if I'm got the 'Cap of Death' or a Dead Ip for POP3 access. I can make use of all the other ports/services. The IP Addy is 196.2.124.2. Has anyone else had this problem?

Well thats probably just their mail server messing around again..

I find Iburst's email goes down a bit, every now and again, usually not a huge problem but irritating. They should cut our monthly charge by R20 oe so and juts give us all Goolge mail or Hotmail adresses. It wil give them less problems anyway.
