Hey guys,

I acquired a Netgear Wireless router over the weekend.
http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/GWirelessRouters/WGR614.aspx

I posted previously about my Marconi router setup here:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=76216

Before I installed the router I tested my bandwidth on the Iburst.co.za site and got around 600-700 kbps and around 40-60 Kb download rates. I connect to the Wonderboom Tower (which I now see is the busiest in SA).

After I installed the router, IE/Firefox would not connect to ANY website. What was strange is that I could ping mweb.co.za or iburst.co.za successfully through the dos prompt, And the router setup showed that it acquired a Iburst IP successfully.

After further investigation, I connected to the Iburst.co.za site 100% through IE, but it timed out on all other sites. I then changed the MTU from 1492 to 1352. Yeah, I could now connect to all sites, but the speeds were very slow.

I then ran another bandwith test and the Iburst utility reported that I now connected at dial-up v92 speeds!

I tried changing the MTU again throughjthe router setup to:
1456,1400,1324,1492,1352 with no joy. 1352 was the "fastest".

I cannot use utilities like dr tcpip or iconnect or utTraceStar, as these only seem to work if you connect to the iburst modem directly (not through router).

Do anyone have any idea or suggestion on how I can tweak this setup to return to my previous 600-700 kbps bandwith through the netgear router?

Where could the problem be?

Please help.

sounds like gremlins. U didnt move the modem to a new position?
Anyways id expect time to sort that kinda non explainable stuff out. Otherwise try turning off every bit of firewall and security protection setting u can find on the computer as well as the router menu. *shrug*

I have the same router, v4.

Never gave me any of those issues, and I'm using 1352 MTU successfully.

So it doesn't look like the router should be the problem, but make sure by trying it out with plain Ethernet to check that it's not anything random on the modem or iBurst network.

Are you connecting wirelessly? If you are on low signal, even though it connects fine, it can cause problems.

Hey guys,

Things just seem to be getting worse. As a first step I disconnected my router and returned to the normal setup, PPPoE connected PC directly to Iburst modem.

This connection is now slower than 14400 modem! And I dont know why.

I ran Dr TCP and configured as follows:
Window 255555
RAS MTU 1352
MTU 1352
TTL 64
and other defaults.

I rebooted PC and modem. No difference. I noticed that when I connected it says connected at 10 mbps and I might be mistaken but previously it said connected at 100 mbps, although Im not sure, and dont even know if this number is relevant.

I use Iburst bandwith tester and get 9 kbps download! This thing is crawling.

Running ipconfig, I have no gateway and windows networking report Limitid Connectivity.

Here is ip settings:

Ethernet Adaptor LAN
169.254.*.*
255.255.0.0
none

PPP Adaptor pppoe
41.208.*.*
255.255.255.255
41.208.*.*

Running Tracestar:

visible tower 2/1/8
current tower 2
-78db/-76/-77
62 ms

2- wonderboom 2km 8/10 load 2

Any ideas please?

The connected at number is irrelevant.

The rest all looks good, the load is not the best seeing as thats the most overloaded tower in SA, but it should still be a lot better than that. No real ideas...

btw, the PPPOE adaptor with the 41.208.*.* IP is the one you want to be *'ing out, that's what identifies you. The other one is your local adress in your network.

Thanks, did you notice that the 41 ip address and gateway is the same address? Is this the way it should be?

Also, does it not matter that my local LAN is not assigned a gateway?
