Hey, like everyone else in South Africa, Iburst constantly annoys me when I wanna play games as I cant in Vista/xp with the network port and the connection stops working after 5 min and the USB doesnt work well with steam when I'm capped and there are no drivers for Vista 64 and most games I have to deal with lag on local servers.

So now I wanna try convince the parents for that closer plan thingie and maybe an openbrowse thing from openweb. Can anyone maybe tell me maybe if this will perhaps be better/faster for browsing and emails(parents) & will the local part of that allow me to play online local games with a decent ping?

thanx in advance

The gaming will be better, and the rest depends on your connection.

In general though 384kb ADSL can browse a bit faster that iBurst, unless the page is quite heavy, then iBurst might load faster.

Sending out emails on 128kb is no fun though.

Rather get a 512k line, overall real world performance is better and more reliable than iBurst, less latency, and not shaped to death.

The question, after latency, really is how much you value speed and how close your iBurst connection is to 1Mbps.

Spare a thought for those poor sods still on 64k Diginet lines...:D

So glad we got rid of ours long ago... :D

But yes, indications seems that iBurst no longer want to give the customer what he/she's paying for... and an 384k/512k line actually might be better.

With the pricing reductions from telkom these are indeed good times ahead... but too little too late :(

I'd say rather go for separate local and intl accounts, better option than openbrowse.

With the latest round of price dropping from Telkom, it is making even more sense to drop Iburst. I would like a 512mbs line with a 3GB cap. I currently don't have any phone lines at home and the line would be used exclusively for internet. Any idea what this would cost all in?

As at 1 August:

Code:
Analogue line rental - R112
ADSL Rental (512k) - R326
WA 3GB - R199
Total - R637

This compares to an all in cost of R666  for do3 (4MB line + 3GB TelkomInternet). Someone check my numbers, I suspect I've missed something somewhere.

Hellkom

Unfortunately I've been recommending the Telkom solution to everybody due to the absolute instability of the iburst connection. I'd say 20 hours out of the day I'm surfing at modem speeds (or if I'm LUCKY twice that). The other 4 hours of the day, I'm sleeping. But if I happen to be awake at those times, it's quick.

Oh, and the fact that I've used the Telkom 384 option and it just FELT sSOOOOOooo much faster. Well worth it.

I'm not sure if the Do bundles include Analouge rental? I think you're meant to have that already, but most people do in any case.

The DO bundles are a good deal, and 512kb was left out of them so the 4mb option is a bit cheaper...

It will be interesting to see how iBurst responds to these price cuts telkom and other ISPs are making, except they are "caught" between their share holders <--(who want their quick promised buck) and their customers who they will be losing in ever increasing numbers if they don't catch up to the competition.

Besides catching up they need to get their network up to standard so that it can handle the existing customers never mind 60,000 new "suckers".

I would jump ship if there was a 512k do option. Paying R600+ is just too much.

It seems since iBurst is marketing their product at the lower LSM groups (enty level “broadband” user), that the service will become the new dial-up version compared to Vodacom’s service since it would be in conflict with their service which is marketed at the higher level LSM consumer.

After iBurst installed the proxy servers the 1 Mbps throughput is no longer available – it barely reaches the 250 kbps mark during office hours when accessing non-cached servers.

EHV that Do price quoted above is including the analogue line rental. Do3 is R575 as at 1 August.

You could go for Do2. 384kbps w/2GB TelkomInternet (which is effectively 4GB) and a 30GB local account for R499 all in.

Well that really sucks. I hate contracts! Now i'm stuck with this pathetic connection for R600

Hmm okay, but the problem is I don't want a Telkom ISP account.. at all.

I'd go for one of the other ISP's "Do" bundles. Just have to wait for them to adjust to the line rental changes.
