Hi

We busy with some research at work and I was provided with a Sentech 128k connection to test.

In Sandton, Sentech recption seems to be good. Infact better than Iburst. I don't even need to hang my modem like with iburst out of the window for a signal. Sentech seems to work anywhere in the house.... is it because of a diff frequency range???

Speeds seem to be consistent at between 116kbps to 126kbps! My VPN into the company's network seems to be much better than with iburst as well. and its only a 128k (will try and get it upto 512k later)

You seem to get immediate response on Sentech...whereas iburst seems to do exactly that...wait...wait....and then burst.......with response.

I now have both and will keep u updated with a comparison....

Test:
Iburst : 100% signal
Sentech: 100% 128k connection
2 pc's

I tested opeining the same website from both connections at teh same time. Sentech outperformed iburst on both local and international sites between 5 to 10 seconds!!!

Can anyone explain this? is if the problem from me to the tower or wbs to uunet. Can;t wait to get teh sentech upto 512k connection to test further.......

I suspect you were feeling the effects of the stuttering/unresponsiveness/0kbps Upload Problem on iBurst.

Try re-running your tests (after clearing browser cache) with the Workaround in my siggy.

yep okbps problem. Cleared cache... sentech 128k still outperforms iburst!!! I am amazed at the response with sentech connection.....

Further, run a ping on both connections:
iburst max: 3332ms and avg=260ms
sentech 128k max: 231ms and avg= 98ms !!!!expalin that WBS!!!!

WBS: care to comment on how Setechtech's MyWireless128 could possibly outperform WBS' iBurst @ 1Mbps?
.................................................
No? Why am I not surprised?

There are alot more factors that come into this one.. namely iBurst has been having network releated problems of late, which could have been occuring when these tests were run. Then theres the fact that they are both wireless and unreliable in certain areas, in my experience a 100% signal in Sandton never gave me the same performance as 90% at the airport. Lastly a few tests doesn't exactly constitute scientific data, I think you should use something like linespeed from tcpiq.com and build up data over longer periods of time.

Also I think I should mention that although iBurst is a potentially 1mbit connection it will not pull most webpages and images at 120KBps... but it *should* at least beat the pants off Sentech. Well theoretically anyways.

<:)>
B4 I get nailed for my previous post, my objective was to solicit a response from WBS. I agree that comparing LSM results after a 7 day period is a better test to use.

I could care less about Sentech - I just want to have my speed back & be able to do stuff - like use VoIP, email, browse, etc etc etc - basically I just want an internet connection that is more reliable than dialup as opposed to less reliable & slower than dialup.

I think I've also mentioned somewhere that I wish Sentech all the best & I hope they get their act together bcos we need as much quasi & real competition to Telkomonopoly, the same goes for WBS' iBurst

Just ran the test at tcpiq.com. I know it is only the first but:
Sentech128: download speed of 103.94 KBits/sec 12.99 KBytes/sec
Iburst : download speed of 7.97 KBits/sec 1 KBytes/sec

!!!!
WBS, what is going on???? 15 days now without any proper connection on iburst

you must be smoking something

Sentech, where I have line of site to 6 towers, on 512k, get speeds not faster than 22kb/s. I get full 4 lights on the modem BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN IT'S AT 100% SIGNAL STRENGHT, SENTECH CAN'T GET 100% SIGNAL STRENGHT.

I can see 6 towers, connect to 3 (with help of a cantenna) and STILL, if i move the modem 2cm to the left, I lose all signal. iburst is TRUE roaming, handless switchover between towers.

I'm suspecting the recent problems they're experiencing is effecting the service SO serverely that Sentech has become better?!!!?

WBS better shape up!!!

I have 4 lights on sentech....in the middle of my house with concrete wall around.....shifting it as i type this reply and sending....still connected......and no problem.......

btw, you can have 4 lights and not be able to connect to a tower, so i don't care what you say

<my_opinion>
I think wireless is the future, I just don't think anything less than WiMax is really going to cut it, but since we don't have WiMax and iBurst is about, and even if we had WiMax Telkomonopoly would control it...a case of rock & hard place...

torgo do me a favour.

Download an international file from somewhere obscure... not microsoft. But somewhere bizzare.

must be international.

You will notice how iBurst will probably kick the **** out of sentech.

I have myWireless 128 and local is good and with international you get somehwere like 20KB/s for the first 20 seconds and then it drops to somewhere like 4.7KB/s (this has been shown over and over by other sentech users on MW128).

fact is once iBurst goes live then I will consider getting it bcuz even 64Kb/s after cap is more attractive right now then sentech.

I really hope one of these companies gets it right and it seems iBurst might just do that but lets see.

Connection wise I think noone is right switching between towers is not to bad, sentech non-existent.

Just for the record: my speeds are always way better than the ones listed in this thread, however the last couple of days WBS likes to disconnect me at random times for no reason... always on my ass!
