As the title states, has anyone tried iCall?

Is it any good (can you actually hear the other person, and can they hear you?). I know for international there are cheaper options, but this will purely be for local, to get my Telkom bill below R2500 per month :p

Well did the guy in that link even try iCall, I think he's just ranting about it in general.

I wouldn't mind knowing how good the service is itself, not how the iBurst connection would affect it, itis obviously mostly going to depend on your connection.

But besides that would it be the same quality as other VOIP providers like Skype? If your Skype ran fine then would hte results be the same using iCall?

Why dont u look at telkom's closer plan?

The closer plans mostly make provision for landline to landline calls. I am looking for something with a significant reduction in landline to cell calls

Wouldn't something like Vodacom's talk 1000 plan reduce that amount if you used least cost routing?

See, my wife is already on the Talk 1000 :p ... due to the bad reception in our house, she is pretty much forced to use the Telkom line ... plus she kills the Talk 1000's minutes in a month as well

Have you considered a gag? :p :D

hehehe, its her job to be on the phone pretty much 75% of the working day ... and no, she is not a telesales person, or the person playing the Telkom hold music :D

If she's mainly making peak calls the Virgin rates aren't too bad if you used it combined with LCR, on V100 its R1,95/min and then R1,55 after the first 5 mins. A gag would be cheaper though. :D

iCall is a novel idea, but the handset for sale on the iBurst website is WAY too expensive in my opinion. Its not even cordless!!!!!

To answer the question, I haven't used it personally, but as far as pricing goes, getting Skype is WAY cheaper. Even the Skype handsets are cheaper.

I would like to trial the service before buying ... yeah right, like iBurst made provision for that.

I will consider the Wireless VOIP router ... then I can plug in two cordless phones on the router itself

If iburst could connect me to there iCall offering I could tell you how it sounds,Day 8 and no connection.iCall you can phone out,but not recieve calls, yet.
Iburst offers no Trial period, they just keep telling me it works, you decided.

I suggest wait till Neotel shows its hand.

I contacted them about getting the iCall service for myself - but they don't yet have an incoming interconnect. This makes the service pretty useless - and no real competition to Skype since the rates are higher.

No VoIP service is worth their salt (IMO) until they can provide me with a South African dial in number and this requires interconnects with at least Telkom, Vodacom and MTN.

1 week later and after iBurst promised to set up a demo account so I could help them help me connect to iCall, the silence has made me investigate the Telfree offering, another local offering ,that allows 3 months free number use, thereafter a R28 fee per month is levied call rates are cheaper ,[iCall charges R50] servers reside in South Africa, and termination agreements are with Vodacom,MTN and shortly with Telkom and Cell C,allowing phone back on the allocated number they give you.
No connection fee or admin fee.
This service is in its infancy and they will tell you that , they are working to make it work first before they Launch.
Methods of payment are been addressed and the freedom to pay as little or as much as you want for talk time are rather appealing.
as this is this companies Core business, and not a value added service ,clearly the focus is on customer centric options, not making me pay to cannabilise my own bandwidth as in the iCall offering.
