ICASA cracks down: beware the wrong cordless phones

Good in must mean that they have resolved all the other more serious issues and can now focus on smaller problems.
 
The regulator said that is beginning a nationwide crackdown on illegal handsets. “While we have the power to search and seize illegal equipment, we encourage people to hand in illegal handsets to our offices”.

Cordless telephones operate in the 400Mhz spectrum and the Cellphone operators use from 800Mhz upwards so how exactly do these cordless phones cause interference? Smells like horse manure to me.

People complain about poor mobile coverage. ICASA investigates and find a problem so big they actually go public with it trying to resolve the issue and you tell them to get knotted?

So, ICASA gets slammed for not doing enough about cellular quality and when they do, they get slammed again? :rolleyes:
 
Do the big retailers (eg Makro, Game) get fined or just a slap on the wrist if they sell unapproved phones? Maybe ICASA can start with the low-hanging fruit and fine big retailers selling illegal phones in large quantities.

Beri - The phone sold by Makro is not exactly the same as one of the listed illegal phones in the article.

Seems like it is only the Panasonic 1.9GHz DECT 6.0+ phones that is illegal.

Hmmm...

A Telkom Beryllium 3500 I purchased from the Telkom retail outlet in Cresta 2 years ago has no Icasa sticker on it... nothing on the base-sets or handsets with any Icasa logo or anything.

EDIT: Also, Siemens Gigaset purchased from Makro is also devoid of any Icasa labeling.

I vaguely remember someone posting here on mybb once about how he complained about his signal going to the dogs all of a sudden and then a few weeks later some guys showed up at his complex with some kind of antenna thing and knocked on his neighbors door and confiscating some equipment. I dont know if this is true or not though.

I wonder how Icasa planning on curbing such a huge problem then? I hope they get it right though.
