ICASA gives e-rate teeth

lmao. R150k fine. yeah thats going to scare Telkom into obeying the law.

If they wanted action, Make it 15% of Gross profit. That would scare them. 150k they make back in an hour or so.

ha ha big ha

how will they clamp down on offenders?

sorry, I'm disillusioned by the greed of today's world.

How exactly are they going to calculate a 50% discount for ISPs that ONLY supply services to schools?

The ISP would probably have to prove how many of their clients are schools and how much data they used. Telkom would then apply a formula and tell the ISP what the cost is including the 50% markup for the e-schools rate.

this is rather interesting - have been trying for ages to get information on this, but despite writing and talking to schools... nothing, you would think they had a gag order - 150K per school, get a thousand schools complaining and you are talking - according to the act this applies to ADSL and not just dail-up - on the down side this will kill any hope relief to business and consumers, IVs parting spanner in the works - of course if you had unmetered local calls and realistic Broadband pricing (and limits) then there would be no need for the eRate - but thats what happens when you settle for the crumbs they throw

Btw ~ thought the eRate went back to 2001 - there was a complaint lodged with Icasa in 2006
