ICASA Presentation

rpm, that was great man, I would just liked you to have said, "Vodacom 3g, iburst and Sentech still needs to buy international bandwidth from Telkom, which is unreasonably priced"

But I understand that the whole arguement wasnt about Telkom overpricing bandwidth, but overpricing it's ADSL rental.

When do we expect to hear from ICASA? Or will Telkom try and shut them up as usual...

Just to say congrats from my side on an excellent presentation - well done!

Btw, they charge you R404 installation fee, plus R1200 for the first month (you pay 1 month ahead of time)

So they make around 200% profit off you in the first month, and then 100% each month after that. Quick thumbsuck maths

Btw, 70 dollars = +- R430

Co-inkiedink?

Very good rpm ... well layed out and reasoned without the emotional baggage.

Noone,

To answer your question regarding ISP's buying bandwidth from Telkom. This issue was addressed at length by MTNNS and IS who gave their presentations directly after RPM.

They hammered away the message on how costly it was for them to buy bandwidth from Telkom, and proved that Telkom was cross subsidizing their Retail business, as they were not able to compete with Telkom.

The SAT 3 cable was addressed too, and the CEO of MTNNS told us that Telkom charge 4 times more for bandwidth on the SAT 3 cable as what British Telecom sell it for , and get this.....BT are not even a member of the cable consortium! Telkom being the largest shareholder is sure to get a big discount aswell!

As I stated earlier all the facts released by RPM, MTNNS & IS were backed up with good research and references, unlike Telkom and the Markinor survey they paid for.

RPM did request that ICASA get hold of this Markinor survey and release it to the public, so that Apples can be compared with Apples.

All presentations that I have listened too produced overwhelming evidence that Telkom needs to slapped on the wrist, and that if SA wants to join the global IT revolution, and we are already way behind in this race, then drastic measures will need to be taken, and nothing else.

"ooopsy-daisy"

Talk about sending the wrong thing to the wrong person....I got this email from Diane Ngosheng at ICASA in response to Dr Sharon Horton's view on attendance at the ICASA ADSL hearing. A soft line for Telkom? I think so!!! HERES IRREFUTABLE PROOF!

And well done everyone on showing SOUTH AFRICA that a bunch of consumers can actually say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and do something substantial and meaningful about it.
All the very best
Peapod

Hi Diane,

Our discussion this afternoon regarding Council's request that Telkom respond at the end of all the oral representations on Monday 18 April 2005 at midday refers.

Telkom would be pleased to respond at the end of the oral representations. Telkom is, however, unable to commit to answering to any specific issues raised by any of the representations as most members of Telkom's panel will be unable to attend the full proceedings for the four days. Telkom's response will, however, be guided by the oral presentations themselves. Telkom is prepared to also answer in writing to ICASA on any substantive matter raised in the Hearings.

We trust that the above response meets with the Council's approval.

With thanks and regards,

Dr. Sharon Horton

Hi Thabo,

yes I am thanks .Thanks for the media release. ICASA requests that Telkom makes two representations one at the beginning of the hearings as scheduled and another at the end of the hearings in response to the submmisions received which is on 18 /04.05 .

Kindly advise if this is possible.

Yours Sincerely

Dianne

I'm not reading anything bad in this.

The ICASA hearings are a sort of leag proceedings. It is essential to be fair to Telkom, and this fairness includes the opportunity to defend itself against the masses of speakers in public.

I believe it would even be fair to arrange for a continuance of the hearings a week later to give Telkom the opportunity to prepare properly.

However, if ICASA allows "secret" defenses afterwards, that would not be fair.

It has to be public, so each and everybody can take it on if Telkom is not too kind to the truth.

hi kaspaas

you miss my point. the mail from ICASA to Telkom is chummy. do we have the same kind of chummy relationship or is our position a far more serious one.....that was my point.

kindest regards

Hi Peapod & others

The letter leak caused a bit of a stir, but do not read too much into the content. From what I have seen ICASA is completely objective. I think anybody that attended the hearings will confirm this statement. I think we should give our support to this organization since they had a choice to either investigate Telkom or not, and they decided that it was the right thing to do. Believe me when I tell you that Telkom did not want this to happen! If ICASA was not impartial we would have never had these hearings.

It might look like a flame, but it is not :D Always great to see you here, just wanted to give my view on the matter…

Regards,

RPM

Good point.
