I'm considering importing a PLC for monitoring and reporting the state of various other devices. The PLC reports by SMS on the GSM platform.

Is there an issue with ICASA in importing such a device? Will customs have anything to say?

If you have a Customs Import code from SARS then the customs clearance process will be okay.

All radio equipment that is used needs to be ICASA approved, whether you build it yourself or import it.
See the following 2 links for type approval forms and regulations:
- https://www.icasa.org.za/Legislatio.../TypeApprovalFramework/tabid/751/Default.aspx

You can also phone ICASA and ask for the RF Type Approval Department. They are quite helpful, if someone answers the call.
There are also 3rd parties that will do the paperwork for you.

Thanks for the links WireFree. I have an importer's code but it looks like it will be an expensive and lengthy process just to bring in one or two units.

Hi,

Can you perhaps post more info on the 3rd parties that can help with the paperwork etc.

I'm also interested to get some hardware type approved but also have the same experience you mention that it seems quite a mission getting hold of the guys at Icasa for the type approval.

Isaca is highly needed in namibia...What are the tertiary requirements and what's the relevant work experience required?
