What are your thoughts? do you think this will address Fragmentation in the long run?

basically the same idea in iOS where both iPhone/iPad use the same OS essentially, removing the need to have two different OSes for the two different formfactors

I think, the more the merrier! I don't care what anybody says, but this might be their way of working to a stable "end-point" perhaps?
 
damn. for a minute there i was seeing this new Ola Triple Toffee Ice Cream Sandwiched between wafers of caramel waffle and drizzled with peppermint crisp.

At least Android Ice will force OTA updates on manufacturers so we dont have to wait for ie. Samsung, or SonyEric to come to the party - in some cases 18 months after a version update.

the thing is, people don't like being behind technology trends every two weeks.

However, I think it's good google decided to make a unified operating system. It means that developers have then a massive user base, and that google can focus on developing that OS, hoping to push it past the sleek Apple OS.
 
Well I am excited but 2011 Q4 is so far off. I think this is a fantastic move. I just want my Darky's Gingerbread ROM on my SGS and couple more regular updates from Google of Honeycomb on my tablet while I wait. I look forward to what the next tech trends bring.

True. But I for one love it, and I am sure developers and tech junkies worldwide, will agree with me!

But on topic, yes, all-round OS I think will benefit everybody!
 
Definitely a good idea, but surely developers will still have to write tablet specific apps to take advantage of increased screeen resolution etc? Scaling is one thing, but to leverage the advantages of a tablet you will still need unique applications.

The interface can be designed to scale. They could even make a separate tablet interface without making it into a separate app.

Most Android apps already have interfaces that scale to the many different screen sizes and resolutions of Android phones.
 
I could have been clearer - the separate tablet interface is really what I was getting at. An example of this from the other side of the OS divide would be Pocket Informant for iOS: same app doing the same things, but a compeltely revised interface for the iPad makes it a much more compelling proposition for that device than if it were just the phone version scaled up.
 
Sounds great! What will the hardware requirements be? Will it come as an upgrade to Honeycomb, or will you have to buy it with the device?

As I understand it, Google's Fragments API is designed to fix this. I still haven't seen how it actually works in practice, though. I imagine it functioning a bit like frames in old-school HTML coding.

The new API for honeycomb allows you to bring up more panels depending on screen size.

Example Email application
On phone, Screen one has a list of emails and when you select an email it opens screen 2 with the mail for reading, when done you close or go back to screen one.
Same app on tablet one screen has both the list and a side panel for mails so when you click on an email it just opens it next to the list.

All you do in the code is bind the 2 panels and change a property that if there is space it will open both.

1 app but different layouts depending on resolution available.
 
Great, that's exactly what they need. Looking for a tablet now and it seems like those changes could potentially really add to productivity - which is a good thing if I want to get my employer to pay for it :p
 
Exciting time ahead, I like the part about forcing manufactures to upgrade sooner that very much later.
