hi guys, i was on a irc room earlier, this person made conversation with me on the public room, stating all my personal details, including my ID number. I had asked him earlier to help me set up my own irc room, accidentally giving him my master password. Does he have the right to access personal information of mine and display it publicly?

Here is a link to the conversation, i took down his IP details with an info query.

whats your thoughts?

If he accessed your Piggs Peak account without your permission I'm guessing that's illegal but IANAL.

Change your passwords immediately if you haven't already.

Maybe you can log a case with SAPS if they have stolen anything?

I'm sure you can do something with telkom

8 Third Party Internet Relay Chat (Irc)

Although TelkomInternet may offer IRC software, you may not use IRC scripts or programs that interfere with or deny service to other users on any other server or host. You also may not engage in activities that harass other users. This includes, but is not limited to, "flooding" (rapidly entering text with the intent to disrupt service), "flashing" (disrupting terminal emulation), "takeovers" (improper seizing and abuse of operator privileges), attempting to send private messages to those who do not wish to receive them, attempting to return to a channel after being banned from it, and other disruptive behaviors. You may run clones (multiple simultaneous IRC connections) and robots only as permitted by the host IRC server.

accidentally giving him my master password.
Not bright, but I doubt it will be worth your while trying to force legal action.

You can't get his IP without ShadowFire disclosing it, which would require a (US?) court to order it's release. Then you'd need similar legal action for IS to release the session details relating to that IP. And then you'd need Telkom to give you his personal details based on that session. And all of this, before you even know his real name?

IRC is basically a free and unmoderated medium. Your best bet would be starting a dispute with Shadowfire to see if they will handle it themselves, but I doubt that. Moral of the story is: NEVER give your password to ANYONE.
