Hi,

I bought a 300GB IDE HDD when my pc died last year. Since then I've upgraded my pc. What I want to know is:

Can i run my IDE with a SATA HDD, SATA as the main HDD?, and how easy is it to set up?
or do I have to get one of those IDE to SATA converter thingies?

The reason why I ask is because not so long ago I put an IDE HDD in my bro's pc (which uses a SATA as primary) and the whole system totally crashed. Speed is not an issue with the IDE HDD as it will be storing stuff that I dont use.

Thanks in advance,

Oy, I just answered your other question and now your asking another one :D

Answer: Depends on your BIOS. I've seen some BIOS's that treat the SATA drive as and IDE drive. Consider a BIOS upgrade if things don;t look like they're working.

LOL, ye.

um well ive got the M2N SLI Deluxe, and another thing that i dont know and probably will never know is how to do the bios.

um, will the newer boards be able to support this, as mine is quite new.

I had a really bad experience mixing SATA and IDE drives a few months ago. My PC slowed to a crawl and every time I copied something from one drive to the other, there was about a 30% chance that the whole PC would freeze. The tech support guy at the store where I bought the SATA drive told me it's a fairly common problem. I removed the IDE drive and now everything is fine.

would a IDE to SATA converter fix this kind of problem?

I've been running my PC with 2 SATA HDD and 2 IDE HDD without any problems since January. I think mixing IDE and SATA is OK if your motherboard is fairly new or your BIOS is up to date.

Did you use an Sata to IDE converter to run the IDE Hdd? Or Was there an IDE interface on your mobo?

I'm running an Asus P5k and have a 320GB Sata and an 80GB IDE (on a dedicated ide on mobo), with no problems at all ;)

The MB had both IDE and SATA built-in.

In answer to the question about the converter: I have no idea :-).

i have two IDE and 5 SATA hard drives running.. on a 2006 mobo though.. no issues.

would get usb 2 ide external case... cheap.. should solve problem and you can keep the ide as long as you want

That is what I have done with the remaining IDE drives I have. IDE can be a bother at the best of times, but when you try to mix it with one IDE and one SATA drive, it often does not turn out well.

Yeah just put your IDE jumper on slave also if u have a cd/dvdrom put the jumper on slave as well then u will not have problems. Your sata will then be your master. Some sata drives needs u to install drivers sometimes just lookout for that.

If u do just put your cd/dvd on master jumper and the ide on cable select.
