Judging from the bandwidth WebOnline said MyADSL 'allegedly' used, I think we should come up with a plan for the site. If we can all come up with feasible, implementable ideas we can have MyADSL local again using far less bandwidth. A couple of ideas from my side so far..:

1) The number of replies per page should rather be 10 instead of 20, that should just about halve the bandwidth already
2) We should craft a decent style sheet which would remove most of the repeated formatting code

If there is any PHP or CGI server-side app which can compress the HTML before the page is sent to the user that would also shave a good 10-20KB. I compressed page 1 of the Telkom 4GB poll and it lopped off whole 20K, quite a lot of bandwidth if the site is receiving around a million hits!

Any ideas from peepz how to get this site streamlined? If we can get this sorted, MyADSL will not only use much less bandwidth, but will also be that much faster.

rpm, what do you fink?

Hi Mad

It might be of value for speed, but since MyADSL is now hosted internationally bandwidth is no longer a problem. We are already looking at some other forum options...will keep you informed :-)

I have no idea what Hosting costs here or overseas, but it’s just staggering to note that how much Webonline charged RPM for one months use. R7000 is overboard. I mean who can afford these prices. And we all know that Telkom is the underlying problem. RPM then takes the site overseas and is able to pay for 6 months in advance. Who are the losers and winners here?

Winners:
Overseas Hosting Company.
Telkom can sell more accounts to ADSL users who want to access overseas sites when capped.
ROI on the SAT3 cable for Telkom.

Losers:
Local Hosting Companies.
SA Economy.

In both cases, Telkom can’t lose. Either way they make money. But the poor old SA consumer just keeps paying and the country as a whole just keeps losing.

Hi BTTB

Excellent summary of the situation! I am still using a South African company for hosting the site…they simply make use of an international server for this purpose. The South African hosting companies will find it increasingly difficult to compete against their international counterparts. This can be excused if one wants to host a site mainly accessed by international visitors, but it is difficult to justify the exorbitant costs while most of the traffic is local. A site developed by South Africans for South Africans, hosted overseas by a South African hosting company simply because Telkom’s rates are too high. Ridiculous!

For an example of local hosting Versus US hosting. I have a personal website, here I can buy 75 mg bandwidth and 5 mg diskspace for R50 or as I do, I get 3 GB bandwidth, 100 mg diskspace for R16 from the US.

I now have two lights of signal Strength!

What would be useful and save bandwidth is if when looking for new messages via the active topic, if when clicking on the topic you only got the new messages in the topic. Often you get page 1 of 3 or more pages, and you have seen the first page. Also showing the messages below the posting form could also be a waste.
