Hi there,

Last week I acquired ADSL for my mother. I opted to go for the Billion 7300G wifi router through Cybersmart. She leaves her PC on 24 hours a day. Sometimes (and more specifically every morning when she starts using the PC), she can’t open web pages or download her e-mail. Yesterday morning I went around to her place to see if I could find anything wrong on the router while she was experiencing this problem. I could do the following:

- logon to the router successfully
- I saw that ADSL was connected and that the router had an IP address
- I could ping the router’s ADSL IP address
- I could ping the routers’s LAN IP address
- I saw that both the PPP and ADSL lights on the router were on

I did the following on her PC:

- did ipconfig and confirmed that the PC had a valid settings for IP address and Subnet mask, and the Default Gateway was the LAN IP address of the router
- I tried to ping www.cybersmart.co.za and www.telkom.co.za and it didn’t work.

My mother tells me that she has to reboot her PC to get rid of the problem. I then did an ipconfig /renew which seemed to fix the problem, but later she told me it started happening again. I did notice that the network card was setup to be powered down by the PC to conserve power (she is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable).

Has anybody got any ideas why this might be happening? It seems that if the PC is idle for a few hours, something funky happens that causes the LAN to not not see anything "on the outside".

I forgot to add that the PC is also running ZoneAlarm.

It shouldn't matter, just make sure ZA isn't in lockdown mode, then it should be fine, run that app I gave you, it should work ;)

Edit: Also make sure in the Internet settings of the router that NAT is enabled, if I disable that on my 5102G I can't ping or do nada ;)

Teraside: Thanks bru! I had her run that app on her PC, and after the install everything came back up and connected OK (praise da laawd!). Now we'll see if this nasty goes away.

I'll check on the NAT setting next time I'm there.

I'm telling you, being FamilyHelpdesk (TM) is a beee-haaach sometimes! :)

There is also a setting on the setup for network card (under control panel) that allows PC to shut down card to save power try disabling that. Its under power management under configure for the network card.
