Sasha Lee Davids’ Idols crown hangs in the balance due to a technical glitch with voting procedures on Sunday.

It has emerged that cellphone network irregularities may mean that a "significant number" of votes may not have been counted.

A recount is underway, according to a statement from the host channel of the show, M-Net.

The statement said: "post-show analysis revealed… that a significant number of the SMS votes were received after the cut-off time of 18:05 on Sunday evening, due to possible external system latency."

An investigation will determine whether the SMS votes were sent before the final cut-off time of 18:05 on Sunday evening, making them legitimate.

The two finalists, Davids and Jason Hartman, have both been advised that the results may change, said the statement.

Theo Erasmus, Channel Director of General Entertainment for M-Net, said: "The moment we were alerted to possible system problems, we contacted the mobile network operators to request additional data, which could be verified by independent auditors. M-Net hopes to complete this audit in the shortest time possible.

It is crucial to M-Net that our viewers can be assured that every vote counts because accuracy is paramount in a show of this nature."

The three mobile network operators, MTN, Cell C and Vodacome as well as M-Net’s service provider, are all co-operating with M-Net to ensure a speedy outcome, said the statement.

As soon as the investigation is complete, the results will be made known to the public.

Hmmm similar stuff has happened here in the UK with a few phone in and vote shows the channels were nailed with mahoosive fines.

Heard Hartman on the radio today and he reckons that no matter what happens, Sasha Lee is the winner.

IDOLS GLITCH - NO WAY!!!

Howcome right through the entire duration of the recent idols series, there was never any "glitches" as far as the voting is concerned, and suddenly now, with the votes to determine the winner, there is a so called "glitch" .

Maybe there were other "glitches" then too, and the wrong contestants were voted out every Monday evening?

Only in South Africa!!! - Makes one think, ..... does'nt it?

But it's not only SA.... Google ITV fine for phone in competitions.... In fact if you Google BBC, ITV, Channel 4 you'll see it was a common problem.

IDOLS

Okay, maybe there was a "problem',but it still is just so annoying that absolutely very little in this country runs on well oiled wheels. I mean, a TV series, competition, whatever, from USA, UK, will be "adopted" by the powers that be here in S.A., and local people take part (think Big Brother, Survivor, who wants to be a millionaire, etc, etc) well,we pay to watch this painfully BORING S.A. "copy" of these programs, and at most, only twice is this done, then the whole thing is dumped, no matter which series etc was copied.WHY?

Also, online shopping here is a major joke, dead websites (not paid for) then suspended, or next to the list of articles/items for sale on the website, the number 0 next to 95 out of 100 items listed, contrary to USA and UK, oh how you must be envied being in the heart of the UK ( despite the rainy climate)

LOL who cares? Come on ppl it's Idols. Load of *** anyway.

Catch 22

If the Chick (Don't know her name) still wins there are always going to be people saying it was rigged. If the Dude (Don't know his name either) wins and they give him the same prizes as the Chick (Coz they said they will not revoke the Chicks Prizes) other contestants are going to come out of the wood work wanting proof that they didn't wrongfully get voted off.
I hope that this ends the whole Idols crap and we never have to live through another.
My 2c

This is very poor publicity for Idols.

They should have kept this private until after a vote recount imo. By this it may have not been necessary to have said anything as Sasha may still be the winner.
They have now put themselves into a position where Jason could claim against Idols and a whole Audit might be necessary.

I find this Reality TV so annoying at times, to consider we have to wait for weeks on end for any indication of the winner in the first place.

I think that these so called reality shows are just about the money. Mnet gets the voters to pay for the show through the cell phone charges and also meets some local content target. Fundamentally they don't care who wins.

Some members of the public do care so I would suggest that Mnet reimburses each and every person whose vote was recorded late due to a fault in the technology for each of their votes.

I am sure that Mnet would have some clause in the competition details that speaks to votes received by x time, rather than votes sent by x time. Like it or not, the Sasha Lee victory looks set to stand.

I also heard some guy going on about disingenuous calls into 702 yesterday. Maybe the lines would have handled the identical volume of calls. But one both lines have reached saturation you cannot determine who had the most 'lost' votes. You might expect then that both contestants would get equal scores, unfortunately the over flow of votes may have been subjected to differing buffers - not every call on Sunday was about Idols and the cell networks would have had normal traffic to deal with - and there is no even spread of that across the country.

This was an epic technology FAIL.

And what are you doing to fix these problems?

Nothing, so the problem will continue ...

Thanks
