Sasha Lee Davids’ Idols crown hangs in the balance due to a technical glitch with voting procedures on Sunday.
It has emerged that cellphone network irregularities may mean that a "significant number" of votes may not have been counted.
A recount is underway, according to a statement from the host channel of the show, M-Net.
The statement said: "post-show analysis revealed… that a significant number of the SMS votes were received after the cut-off time of 18:05 on Sunday evening, due to possible external system latency."
An investigation will determine whether the SMS votes were sent before the final cut-off time of 18:05 on Sunday evening, making them legitimate.
The two finalists, Davids and Jason Hartman, have both been advised that the results may change, said the statement.
Theo Erasmus, Channel Director of General Entertainment for M-Net, said: "The moment we were alerted to possible system problems, we contacted the mobile network operators to request additional data, which could be verified by independent auditors. M-Net hopes to complete this audit in the shortest time possible.
It is crucial to M-Net that our viewers can be assured that every vote counts because accuracy is paramount in a show of this nature."
The three mobile network operators, MTN, Cell C and Vodacome as well as M-Net’s service provider, are all co-operating with M-Net to ensure a speedy outcome, said the statement.
As soon as the investigation is complete, the results will be made known to the public.
