You go away on holiday and your computer stops working properly....

I have Telkom ADSL. With IE some pages "cannot be found". This is a sporadic problem as sometimes it will find a page that it could not previously, although some pages are never found...

I also had a problem with my mail server.... the POP3 address was not working so I could send but not receive mail. The guy who provides this service gave me a new POP3 address and it works, but then it also seems sporadic.

This guy tells me it could be the Netgear router. I can see nothing wrong there but I don't know what I am looking at, anyway. I recently added a wireless laptop. Could this be the problem? The problem is there whether this laptop is on or not. By the way, how do I stop someone hooking onto my wireless connection?

I know that I have not explained this very well, but if anyone can work out what I am saying and help, I would appreciate it greatly.

By the way, I thought of going to Mozilla (?) as I used this web browser before, but for some reason - a year or so back - some drop down menus on some websites would not drop down. Should I try again with it?

Download Firefox and play with it and see if you like it. I can't see why it won't work for you

We had the same problem today, our service provider said all their clients had the same issue. Hopefully sorted out by tomorrow.

Got sorted out!
Telkom gave me proxy server details for the LAN and it works again. Did not really understand the explanation but seems that IE needs some help (he mentioned possible corruption) or problem on the Telkom side though he was not aware of anything. Anyway, this is what fixed it:

ON IE: Go to Tools, then Internet Options, then Connections. Go to LAN settings. Click on Use Proxy server for your LAN, enter this address: 196.43.9.21 and this Port: 8080 Do not click on the "Bypass" option. Click on OK. Restart IE

Thanks to all the guys who answerered. I am going to take another look on Mozilla.

Proxies are a bad idea, the web-sites aren't always up to date (Not such a rare occurance as you might think, even the SAIX transparent proxy is out of date sometimes), and you STILL pay the full price of the bandwidth you used while SAIX saves a bunch of cash.

You should consider switching to Firefox and disabling the proxy altogether.

Thanks for the education and advice, Gnome. I am downloading Firefox - using the link provided above to get the UK english version - as I write this. But what is the reason for my having to use proxies with IE? Is a proxy a copy of a website?
