IE8 blacked out header

When I boot, the Internet Explorer 8 on XP service pack 3,displays blacked out tools and favourites buttons with only the favorites icons showing- is there a simple fix ?

Any particular reason you're using IE8? I find Google Chrome or Firefox way more stable.
