Li-Fi standard released — wireless networking 100x faster than Wi-Fi

Tom's Hardware reports that the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has released 802.11bb as a standard for light-based wireless communications, often referred to as Li-Fi.

Li-Fi uses light spectrum instead of the radio frequency spectrum that Wi-Fi employs to transmit data packets over the air.
 
Clearly, the creators of Li-Fi have no idea what loadshedding is...

It seems impractical but I guess if you have a large warehouse, hall or open office I guess it would make sense....

But if someone walks between the receiver and the emitter does the device lose signal and disconnect? Wi-Fi was pretty iffy in its early years, so a line of sight signal must be more so.
 
Old tech...been used in some African villages for ages. Some guy even wired his entire little village with led lights.

Was wondering when they mass launch it since the infastructure was lacking, hence the drive to led. Welcome to your 1984 home where they can telementary you even id you don't have an internet connection. Thanks to li-fi and bluetooth ble.
 
Could be interesting for IoT - in home communications over smaller distances. Will need to see how cheap hardware can be though to beat radio based options.

Or car -> car comms. Hey you're too close, back off. automated type systems...

They'd still need an internet connection. That's at least one small speedbump in our favour.

His 2015 demonstration was simplex communication (probably using a UDP stream), so broadcast only, yet it claims to be full duplex? I would like to see a working application and product of that.

You're right, they are mainly download.

I think the Solace project (integrating external 5G mmWave with internal LiFi) must be full duplex otherwise there's no use case.

I must say that although the 'HDMI cable replacement' use case can be simplex, it is by the most compelling for me so far, for the short term. I would buy a kit tomorrow, if affordable

Like the sabc, they had a device that could detect if you have a TV inside your house from the street
