Hi there, here my story in short.

My phone got stolen, I got the phone blocked and the sim-swop the next day. When the simcard got active I noticed that most of my airtime was missing. MTN call centre confirm that the airtime was transferred to another number shortly after it got stolen.:erm:

-I don't have the IEM number - phone is 5 years old.
-MTN refuse to given me the number the airtime was transferred to without a case number.
-SAPS refuse to help me without the IEM number.

Any advice here? I'm more interested in catching the person than getting my phone back.

It's actually an IMEI number and if you have the original box the phone came in then the number will be on there.

If it's an android then log into this portal: https://www.google.com/settings/dashboard
In the list you will see the android devices, click the triangle on the left to expand and the devices IMEI is listed there.

Did you get the phone on contract? if so MTN should have a record of the IMEI number with the contract documentation.
They should anyway be able to help you with the IMEI number as it should be logged whenever the phone connects to their network.

IMEI... not IEM.

I don't suppose you have any proof of purchase?

No matter. All police need is your your phone number and sworn affidavit. They can get IMEI number from MTN if they want. And there is a trace of airtime transfer (perhaps to some relative), secondary theft case.

When I lost my phone the police wanted the IMEI number. Since I didn't have the box anymore and couldn't find any trace of the IMEI I just dropped everything.

In my case I didn't have insurance so someone out there is still using my HTC Touch Diamond :)

Have you tried contacting Customer Care on 808 ( Contract Subscribers ) or 173 ( Prepaid Subscribers ), they can check the IMEI number of the device for you as long as an MTN Simcard was used in that device.
