For many years now Google has been the dominating market leader is search engines, with virtually no threatening competition from rivals such as MSN, Bing and Yahoo. From within its cozy secured position, Google may have heard the news of a new threat that may soon come to life for the search provider.

Earlier Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, spoke at a tech conference in San Francisco outlining some aspects related to the company’s setbacks in terms of its stock, as well as future plans for the company.

The most important aspect mentioned by Zuckerberg, was the admission that Facebook had a laid-back attitude in terms of the site searches conducted by its users. According to Zuckerberg, Facebook’s 950+ million users conduct an average of 1 billion searches per day on the popular network. Zuckerberg confirmed that it would start to heat up rivalry against Google, by ensuring that the company will work on expanding on its search facilities and probably launch a new robust search engine.

According to ComScore, Google averaged a number of around 4,717,000,000 searches per day in 2011.

If Facebook do enter the search engine domain, bringing along 955 million active users, who all conduct 1 billion searches per day, this may pose a damning threat to Google. These numbers will increase tremendously should Facebook design and launch a simple, yet effective search engine not only targeting Facebook, but the Internet in general.

In short, Facebook may be heading the right way now and surely has the capabilities of dethroning Google as the world’s leading search provider, if this project is done correctly.

Lolsauce. Facebook will be dethroned by Google+ in the coming years. With the Facebook stocks falling as they are they will hardly have the capital to take on the likes of Google which is worth shitloads more than Facebook ever will be.

Wut? No-one I know uses g+. Some have an account but they're all dormant. Facebook's active as ever though.

I'm pretty sure that includes searching for a group or friend, which seems to be about the only way to find them on facebook... (*cough*stalkers*cough*). The thought of a facebook search engine... do not want.

Um yeah, but all users on Facebook search for are other users on Facebook. Can't really compare that to an actual search engine like Google which is used for actual stuff and not just wasting more and more time.

Facebook search - I've used it once or twice to find a friend or group.

And the results are always poor.

The search results were poor or the people turned out to be poor or both? ;)

Uhm, yes, true. But this is what Facebook is about to target.

I am sure that soon you will search for a friend and the results will be combined with general web results as well. The new search engine will gradually be rolled out and users will probably find it to be the only search they will need to find friends, groups, family and even general information.

Oh please, how naive can you be?

Using "number of searches per day" as a metric for how good or bad a search engine is, is like using the number of lines of code a software project has to determine its quality. It's a completely arbitrary, completely useless number.

Facebook is not going to dethrone Google for the simple reason that Facebook doesn't have the search algorithms nor the search data to do so. Fin.

The amount of sponsored ads google shoves down my throught when I do a search aren't doing it any favors.

They will have it soon. They are only about to start on the project.

Let's talk later again.

Facebook, dethroning Google?

Really?

Google's Market Capitalisation : 226.37B Dollars
Facebook's Market Capitalisation : 41.63B Dollars

Google's main market is not search by the way, its advertising. This is an area that Facebook has actually pretty much failed in from what I know.

And what is the biggest way google gets you to see ads? Searches.

But really, this is just facebook shouting "don't devalue me yet! I could beat google!"

Please do not read this wrong. Maybe I should have stated it more clearly. The whole thing is in terms of search, a new search engine that would provide real competition or even surpass Google in terms of SEARCH.

This is exactly what Facebook announced. They are targeting Google search and not Google's business.

Market capitalization is not a factor here. Facebook will surely establish a large number of new income sources if they master the search engine game and one can then take a look at their strategies in terms of income generation and improvement of market capitalization.

Which they will not get right.

Facebook's search will have to be a very specific application of search within the social networking sphere for its first iteration. Google's search has had a decade of R&D in general web and semantic searching. They are VERY different types of searching.

Market Cap is a factor here as it is indicative of the amount of money the company can pour into a venture. Facebook has limited resources to do things like this, whereas Google has the resources and the will to keep at the forefront of web searching.

Facebook (in my opinion) is going to be a shortlived venture... Social Networking will change and morph over time and Facebook WILL make a mistake and become another MySpace.
