If you could start a manufacturing business in SA , what would you start.

Considering the import crisis and decline in the industry, excluding the current financial situation.

What are the Chinese doing that we can't get right in Africa ?

Their manufacturing numbers are in the millions which we can't get right in Africa because we don't have the population.

labour laws first off , no such thing in china .
The weekend mentality of the west , China do not have that Sunday is a rest/holy day , our christian background .
They will work every day and all hours and if the worker do not like it they are out next .
The west do not stand a chance in competing .

You can't produce quality at an affordable price with our work force.

I'd never in my life get into manufacturing in SA, unless it's specialized equipment like oil tanker parts and even then my engineers will be in SA, but the factory will be in China.

Surely in Africa as a whole we do have the numbers?

Are import/export taxes more friendly to other African countries versus the rest of the world?

I wouldn't unless if I could only employ myself and a few other skilled people. Any larger and you are going to waste money.

This isn't unfounded. Take a listen to someone who tried to start a factory to manufacture plastic chairs. It is pretty much impossible in South Africa.

Unions are essentially illegal unless they tow the ruling party line. Since individual rights are at the bottom of the list of priorities for the Chinese government, they don't particularly care for worker's welfare.

Years ago there was a successful furniture manufacturer in Johannesburg. Strike after strike until he closed the business went bankrupt.

Opened another company in his wife's name ;)

Africa as a whole is a failed continent, not many people with money to spare.

Packaging for food could work I suppose.

That is why you get married out of community of property.

There’s lots of money in Africa.

Not as much as other places, but still plenty to go around.
