So I have just come to the realization that I only watch movies if they are in HD (720p and higher) with 5.1 surround. Be it on DSTV or online streaming and it is in SD, I don't watch it. Even DVD is no longer good enough.

Am I the only one...

Nope. Me too, unless it's on my ipad when I'm travelling, then space becomes an issue

HD is low res. I have a 4k tv (and a little bit of 4k content), wait till you see the size of those files!

Waiting for H.265 encoding rips to be more common place...

Nope HD is not the only format I'll watch in. SD is fine by me too.

I prefer to watch 1080. 720 is OK if there isn't a 1080 source, and also perfect for animated stuff. SD I do watch if the content isn't available in 720

I will always get the best possible quality release of whatever I want to watch. Quality doesn't always necessarily mean resolution though, I'd much rather take a high bitrate 720p release over a bad 1080p release. At even a moderate viewing distance the quality difference is hardly noticeable on my 40-inch LCD.

Resolution does make a massive difference though when going below 720p.

1080p is a must. 720p only if necessary, then get 1080p soon as it's out. Otherwise I don't watch it.

Nope. Why do I have a HD tv if I don't use it.

I just finished watching a brilliant 720 version of Rush after deleting two previous 1080 dl's of it.

I also get 720p is possible, and settle for non-HD if it isn't. Downloading Peep Show (again) and the first few seasons aren't in HD.

I used to only do HD then started having issues with space on my server.
Now TV shows are SD and movies HD. While the difference is noticeable, it is not enough to cause an issue.
TV shows I mainly watch on the TV so can't really see the difference. Movies we watch in the HT room on a 120" HD screen. SD don't look so good there.

Why pay R8000 + for a HD tv.10K + for a home theater to watch anything thats not 1080p or 720p.that would be a waste.

I snuff out only HD

Exactly! Which is why only HD is good enough for the HT room.
The TV's are all 1080p but I am happy with SD TV shows on them. We sit quite far from the screens, so still looks damned good.

I will settle for 720p with 5.1 sound. HT equipment worth about 50k but TV is only a 42 :p

Movies, only bluray disc (no cheap 10gb files).
Series, 720p.
Not negotiable. The kit demands it.
