I'm an idiot, bought someone else a car

So... long story short... Bought my ex wife's mom a car around 8 years ago. To my surprise, that car is still on my name despite numerous promises to re-register it.

Apparently the old mother in law recently discovered that I'd moved to another jurisdiction, preventing her from just renewing. How she's managed to renew each year in the interim is still beyond me... anyways.

She apparently needs 10k for new brakes and tyres etc to do roadworthy for the change of ownership. I need to get that car off my name so I'm considering it.

Yes I'm an idiot, and yes Friday came early :ROFL: Have at it, ladies and gents.

It doesn't take much to renew a license, you can do it without any ID.
I'm not even sure why its a problem that you have moved.. I assume you have another vehicle on your name and you registered it under the new address ?

Its at least a clever system that can not have two addresses for Joe Soap.

Even with the car on your name, it would cease to be a bother if it no longer existed...

Nope.

You can NCO a car (take it off your name) without a RWC.

All you need is the original registration certificate, and ID copies of buyer and seller. @OP I presume you dont have the original registration certificate anymore, in that case you can apply for a new one and get the NCO done.

The "new" buyer will then need to take it for a RWC and wont be able to renew the licence until the transfer has been done.

I don’t think that is correct. My car was totalled recently and one condition of my insurance pay out was transfer of ownership. In a private sale the roadworthy is the responsibility of the buyer, not the seller.

Just scrap it. Then it's her baby to repair, roadworthy and re-register.

If you thinking about paying r10k , rather let them take it to a mechanic and get them to check car out , pay the money straight to him and get them to roadwhorthy it.
Depending on area maybe someone here know a honest mechanic

Wish someone would give me R10k for......car repairs.

Is not his problem, force transfer and sleep peacefully. Where's that meme about the audacity of this b**** to even have the cheek to mention that.
 
You can take the car out of your name without a road worthy, it's the buyers responsibility to get that done
