This weekend I went ahead and installed my gas hob.

Some advice for those thinking of doing the same thing.

I bought the Defy 3 gas/1 electric hob, I think the model number is DHG100, was R1999, but with increased demand it should come down.

Got two 9Kg gas cylinders from HyperMarket, R379 each.

I went to the local gas shop to get them to come install it and the guy basically laughed and said maybe he'd a have a few minutes available in a few months time (they're all very busy now).

Nevertheless, he did help me with some useful advice which helped me install it myself.

Firstly, if your cylinder is under 14Kg's it doesn't have to be kept outside (I didn't know this), if it's less than 14Kg's you can keep it inside (mines under the sink) and you can connect it with a rubber hose. If it's > 14kg's it has to be outside and you have to use copper piping through the wall (so you're going to have to get an installer, unless you know how to solder copper piping)

Second, you'll need a regulator attached to the cylinder (he sold me one for R97), a length of rubber piping (R10/m) and some clamps for either end. Use hot water to soften the end of the pipe when you're attaching it and then clamp it well. Brush soapy water over the connections to check for any leaks.

And that's it! very easy installation.

BTW, it is apparently illegal to install this yourself, but I'd like to see someone come after me for doing this in the current circumstances.

P.S. 9Kg's of gas = R170, here's hoping those subsidies kick in soon.
 
probably close to a year.

I've been cooking on gas for a few months now. Not sure how big my gas bottle is, but it was very close to empty and it still lasted 2 months.

I also installed a geyser timer. My electricity usage is down by about 30%.

Apologies for the minor semi-derail, but we've started turning our geyser off every morning at 07h00 and on again at 21h00 each night. Where do I find one of those and is it easy enough to install?
 
Did the gas installation myself at home as well. Was very easy, and soldering copper piping is simple really, or maybe I've just done it so often its simple to me now...

Anyway, cooking on gas is infinitely better than electric stoves I've found and its just more fun. :)
 
We've been using a gas hob for years. Saves a bomb on electricity. Electric stove sits there uselessly unless we use the oven. A 9kg cylinder lasts us anything between 3 - 4 months depending on usage of course.

Wish we could get into the habit of switching the geyser off and on though :(
 
My first tank was a 14kg and it lasted 6-7 months - maybe more. The cupboard was large enough so I've now put in the next size up which I think is a 19kg.

I love cooking with gas. :D

I know the feeling. Must admit when I first started using the gas hob I was fooking scared everytime I turned it on :o Kept thinking I was going to blow the house (and myself) up :eek:

I grew up with gas heating, tumble dryers, and stoves but the missus took a lot of convincing before she okay'ed the gas stove.

I used a gas stove when I was in London - I wasn't so much worried about blowing the house up, as having gas leaking out and killing me in my sleep :o
