I'm DSTV-free

Now what to do with my R737.32 per month? :D

Open up a unit trust account with a reputable authorised financial services provider. Although you may not feel the benefit of it today, you will be grateful in years from now that you made the move to increase your savings. Start with half of the amount if you don't want to use it all.

Otherwise I would use it to reduce any debt you have.

Else consider saving toward a dream holiday.

This. Pay off the house bond quicker or any other debt.

Storing stuff locally is so old fashioned.

In the 21st century we stream everything. :)

What would you do if the main cable in your area was stolen? :( No ADSL for a month or more  Been there, done that and got a shirt. Nothing to do at home except reading novels and browsing text-based websites on 3G  Can you survive that ****? Come on, we are in a 3rd world country  It's always a good idea to have a contingency plan for such a ****ty situation as this.

Gotta say this beats everything else that has been suggested so far in this thread.

DSTV free for over 7 years and still don't miss it...

Just did the same earlier this month - well dropped to the R29 package which is basically just SABC. Gone the whole unotelly/netflix/bbc iplayer route, all streamed to my TV's with Chromecast at a fraction of the cost. I do miss SuperSport though, but gf loves all the movie choices! Can even stream Netflix and play BF4 whilst chatting on TS - no issues!

Who's your ISP ? What line speed+package?

Looking at getting Dad to go completely DSTV-less.

I downgraded to the R29 per month option on dstv.
No unotelly. No hulu. No netflix.

Not watching tv anymore in the week days.
It's so much more peaceful these days.

If you can get someone share your DSTV like Xtraview in a granny flat, then it becomes more affordable

South Africa is actually a first world country, but a crap one that doesn't act like it.

The beauty of not supporting the Naspers monopoly. I think paying off your debt (if any) quicker should be the priority and then you can look at other luxuries/ savings afterwards.

There is just so much we are currently following on DSTV, plus wife want her daily Binnelanders, which you can only get with the Premium package.

I am hoping that pay TV will also go the route broadband has by becoming cheaper as we move along. Not quite the same thing I know, but with new competition on the rise it could very well be.

For me, I still got my little MNET decoder and I pay R314 pm for MNET - I do this so I can watch the rugby and other sports and my family watch some shows on there - Masterchef SA and so on. And the I have my R420 2Mbps uncapped and I get what WE want to watch - all comes at the same as DTSV Premium.

It is indeed the perfect opportunity to do something sensible with that money. DSTV still took the money for the next month though, so my plans will be put on hold until I get my refund. I knew it went way too smoothly to be true.

Signup to any service is a breeze but come cancellation time...

/sigh

so what is the best streaming service we can get?
Are we capped at either netflix or Hulu+ at this stage?
