Retired policeman Piet Byleveld, who now heads a private investigations firm, has called on the close friends of murder victim Inge Lotz to get in touch with him, according to a report on Tuesday.

"I like to start at the beginning, and I wanted to see the set-up in the flat. Certain information was made available to me... I'm flippin' close to figuring out a motive," he told Beeld newspaper.

Lotz's parents asked Byleveld in March to track down the murderer of their daughter, who was found dead in her Stellenbosch flat in 2005.

"The murder investigation is moving in a certain direction. If these friends don't come forward, I'm going to expose them," said Byleveld.

Speaking at Cape Town airport after returning from a visit to the murder scene, Byleveld said he made "certain observations" at Lotz's flat.

He declined to discuss names or reveal further details, but urged Lotz's friends to contact him at [email protected].

Lotz's boyfriend, Fred van der Vyver, was put on trial for her murder but was acquitted in November 2007. He is in the process of suing the State for damages for malicious prosecution.

' Read Anthony Altbeker's book and I always suspected a male friend of hers.

I also think that the another man who was lusting after her did it.

I hope the guilty person is found and spends the rest of his/her life behind bars...

Can you imagine all the spam he must be getting now.

It is an interesting tactic he is using ... publicly calling on them to come forward and contact him. He could have traced and contacted them in other, more private ways. I guess he is 'daring' the killer.

Absolutely. It is clearly a reaction test.

I have read so much about this case ... I remember reading one of her friends left for London shortly after the murder. No idea if it was for work, holiday, or what. It must be quite a mission tracking down everybody.

I remember a thread I followed here that you participated in. Got me quite interested in the case. Byleveld is the man for the job. He doesn't miss a beat...

Or he is trying to drum up support for his PI business.

Trust me, he does not need support or publicity. People are breaking down the doors of that business for help, all thanks to his reputation as an excellent detective.

If the killer has got away with it so long, why would he suddenly get spooked by a person who wasn't even involved in the investigation?

Because of his reputation.

If I committed a crime and I heard he was on the case, I would hand myself in :)

Byleveld is the World's most unique and successful investigator of homicides. The murderers do NOT get away. WHoever did this should be sh*tting themselves right now. If you don't know who he is, do a bit of research. Tenacious as all hell and meticulous doesn't begin to describe his methods. His biography (although poorly written imo) is a very interesting read!

Why do you think his biography was poorly written?

I read it, but because I already read a lot about most of the cases contained in the book, there was not much new to me.
