Hi all,

After teetering on the edge of 'disillusioned job-seeker' for a long time now, I finally have an actual interview. I can't tell you long it's been since my last one. :/ I've been looking for anything that applies. :o

The vacancy is that of a Webmaster.

I haven't done mainstream web design for a number of years now, but my personal blog and a few small personal sites and one of a Friend keeps me tinkering. I make use of stat tools at the moment, work between the various social media sites and am able to accomplish a fair number of server-related tasks.

Standards-compliant XHTML, CSS and accessibility code is my main draw, but I can dabble lightly in JS and PHP.

So I am a little nervous, due to the expired time, the lengthy periods between interviews, my long-term existence at my current employer and a host of small reasons.

They're looking for someone who can debug & troubleshoot existing issues, address issues with service providers[?], review [and presumably act upon] analytics and stats and plan for future improvements.

I'm sure that sounds more intimidating than it is.

The salary is dependant upon experience and technical expertise.

Have you got any tips for me, please, and wtF do I answer them with when they ask me about salary expectations? What's the going rate?

Thanks.

tip: calm the eff down.

be honest about what you can and cant do.

for market related salary perhaps check other job offer sites?

No one is always current with everything, just tell them you are a hard worker and not afraid to put in the extra effort when you need to.

Dont lie, they will pick it up if they know what they are doing.

If you don't know something just be upfront and say you are aware of that technology but haven't had the opportunity to work on it but it looks interesting.

*lol* Your tips have been duly noted, D3x! ;)

I do occasionally browse for salary ranges, but most of them are not openly stated. Besides, I have you kind folk to give me an 'on the ground' price. Wouldn't you also ask here?

Stay calm
Research some questions and go over your answers.
Even something simple like 'Tell me about yourself' - my very first interview as a 20 year old for a bursary and i stumbled. I never researched anything and just went in there cold.
Cos something like 'Tell me about yourself' can be so broad that you dont know where to start and where to go...

Just relax bro its friday :D

Believe in what you can do and your abilities (but not cocky though)

Essential part if they speak about new technologies tell them you will learn quick

Thanks everybody.

Based on the info' given, what salary would you feel comfortable asking for?

If it factors in, I'll be 30 in the not too distant future.

Need to factor in what you are currently earning and what you would like to be earning for what you do.

I've never *just* done web design wherever I've been employed. As a result, it's been a constantly-interrupted experience.

I've been building sites on and off since '98.

From what I can gather, so far, it's more a case of updating the existing site at this stage. I know it's database-driven, because they a lot of frequently-changing items on there. Lots of them.

I'm earning what I consider pathetic atm; I get out in the early 9s. I'm not coping on that.

Considering what you are earning now aim for R15k (This for me is like minimum for jhb or cape town) and then performance bonuses etc

It depends alot on the company as well though and hopefully as these webmaster posts expect you to be a jack of all trades but it they pay good master all :)

Also, polish up your little websites, do some stuff with Google Analytics the night before the interview so that the stuff they want is fresh on your mind. I'd ask for a little less than the average as an incentive to get in there.

Finally, relax.
