Hi,

Anyone know of a shop that still has stock of a Canon 40D. I went to Orms last month and they only had 50D's... Don't really feel like spending all that extra boodle for a few extra MP's..

Thanks in advance!

I think it's a bit more involved than just a few extra MP (koffiejunkie would be best suited to confirm/deny that). How about importing from overseas? B&H Photo perhaps?

Extra MP,
Much better LCD screen,
Ability to tweak AF (useful for lenses that have a high hit/miss ratio for AF),
Some report noise reduction is the same or even slightly better

I'll let you know more next week when my 50D comes :)

I'm hoping to bypass the XXD series altogether when my XXXDs finally surrender and head to the single X series. :)

Everything is better on the 50D (I had a 40D before). Except maybe the frame rate, but the difference is minute. The biggest advantage for me is that it has higher ISO modes, and they're usable. But there are many other improvements: better metering, better NR, NR can be set at different levels, to your taste, higher resolution, lens micro adjustments, much faster card access (I think UDMA), and a few more things which I haven't really looked into yet.

There shouldn't be a difference, from what I have read I understand that around the time of the 40D launch, specified drive rates didn't need to be as accurate and thus the 40D is in fact also 6.3 fps. Don't have a link handy for that tho.

To OP, i'd consider waiting for the 60D, which is rumoured to have an all new AF system, or get a 40D second hand. Maybe look out for a bargain on a used 5D or 1D mk. 2... ODP was recently selling them for around R13 000. Wish I had that cash lying around...

Wait, wait, wait... If you don't buy something you'll wait forever, and for what?

Good idea, if you know that the shutter is not about to go.

For those inaccurate screens it would have to be some bargin. Don't get me wrong, the 5D has technically stunning image quality, with amazing resolution and lowlight capabilities that are clearly better than my 2008 D90, however its functionality and ergonomics is just not up there with today's cameras. It's a pig:D, but stunning for landscapes. The 40D, on the other hand, is a modern camera with great functionality, and the best ergonomics I have even seen. Oh, and the screen is accurate too.

LOL Listen to me - I'm talking sh|t on the forums again. I don't even own any of these cameras. :o The guy you want to ask is koffiejunkie.

:erm: For that money you can get a 450D plus 18-200IS

OR

a new 50D body

No brainer!

I'll actually agree with ldmelsa here. The 5D beats the 40D in low light. And a bigger viewfinder. That's all. The 40D is a better camera in every other way. Oh, and the difference between the two in low light abilities, are not as radical as you might expect. The 40D has newer tech sensor, it has a newer version of Canon's DiGiC image processor, much more powerful. It's screen is better and bigger, it's controls are better, the jpegs it output are better.

If you can get a new 40D somewhere, it's a great camera. Get it and get a decent lens on it (my fav is the 24-105L - awesome combo).

No, I stand by what I said. Fair enough, technology is always being updated, but if the OP or anyone for that matter chooses to wait a few months, the 60D should have much improved AF.

You can never know whether the shutter is about to go, so I guess you're either someone that buys second hand to save money or buys new for peace of mind. That said, a friend of mine has had nothing but issues with his 40D while mine has never given me any problems, both were bought new. :/

Inaccurate screens? The screen is much less important than having a full frame sensor or a shutter that does 8fps. As for ergonomics, the 5D is similar to the 30D which, in the hand, is indistinguishable from a 40D except for the finger notch. Obviously, the 1D series is much better. IQ wise there is no competition between an xD and an xxD. Oh, and the 40D screen is still the same resolution as the 1D mk.2 or the 5D, just a bit bigger.

The 18-200 IS is a really bad lens for it's price, same goes for the 17-85 IS.

I realise I'm coming across as very argumentative, but I just want to emphasise that a used 1D mk.2n or 5D is a much smarter purchase, if the price is right. And you can pick up a decent full frame prime for under R5000.

(While I love my 40D, i'd trade it, and all my lenses minus the 28 f1.8, for even a 1Ds mk.1 just to get FF and even better ergonomics.)

Apologies for being blunt. :D

I don't know, maybe I'm on my own here. I really, really, really love wide angle, and in that aspect alone the FF of the 5D kills an xxD for me. To me, the rest, like the speed of the DIGIC, and esp. the JPG output, is of much lesser importance. Granted, a 5D used is more expensive than a 40D new.

I will sell my soul for a 5D married to a 24-105L... with a TS-E 17L in the bag :D

Now say after me: Sigma 10-20mm :D

Interestingly, the 24-105L is very much criticised for it's level of distortions and aberrations on FF, where it's just about perfect on crop. Not that I wouldn't get one again - it's definitely on my shopping list. And yea, a TS-E would be awesome too.

Do you own one? It's neither bad nor bad for the price. It's no L lens, but nowhere near bad. And the price is pretty competitive, given the other options on the market.

Fair enough, I've never used one, but after reading a bit more about it now I guess it's not as bad as I thought. I expected it to be even worse than the 17-85 with such a big zoom range. It's definitely not my type of lens, but it does seem to be handy for travel. Quite expensive though, almost in the range of the 10-22 and 17-40L. Yeah, I like my wides. :P

I have used a friend's 24-105L on his EOS 3, and was really impressed. It's a great focal length range on FF, albeit a bit slow at f/4. Really want to get myself this lens in the future.

If you are buying new and willing to splash around R18k for the 60D, then it would be wise to wait. You'll probably get video and the better AF, but at a much higher price.

I bought a 2nd hand 40D + 28-135IS for R10k and am very happy. At the time, the 50D was R15k. So I was happy to save the 5k which I could use on other lenses or accessories. I'm getting a used 50D for 8k next week. I normally prefer purchasing new as you never know what a previous owner did. His son could have dropped a marble into the camera. Who knows? Its a risk.

The xxD is as far as I'll go. I worry too much about carrying more than my cars worth of equipment with me when I go out to shoot. Imagine walking around with a 1Ds and a couple of Ls.

You make that sound like a bad thing. Although I'm not particularly interested in a 1D, I would love some L lenses.

My camera bag is worth more than than all the cars I've owned in my life, btw.
