I'm new to MWEB uncapped...what now?

Hi friends,

Hoping that someone can give me some pointers...I've been enjoying 4mb line for a while now, using routesentry to split my local and international accounts, and getting full speed most of the time in grabit, torrents etc...

I got myself an MWEB 4mb uncapped account last week but I feel like a total noob now...as I can just not get full speeds on anything anymore, except for "normal" downloading of course. My torrents and grabit downloads rarely sees more than 100kb.

Can anyone who's also on MWEB's 4mb uncapped (or any MWEB uncapped for that matter) give me some advice to improve my download speeds?

Things I would like to know:

I'm using news.mweb.co.za in Grabit....is this the correct one?
How many connections can I use on this server? More than 2 doesn't seem to work
I've read some topics where people talk about astraweb...how does that work? If I subscribe do I replace the news.mweb.co.za server with something else?

i'm afraid these cheap uncapped accounts aren't really for downloading. p2p and NNTP will be put on a very low priority. SSL encryption might help a bit, but i dunno -i'm one of the local only sloths

Your previous setup, while tedious and limited on usage, was superior. You're using a service now which is far more contented (at the moment) and so you shouldn't be expecting the same speeds... many ports are shaped more aggressively - but this should probably be changing soon, it's just that many people aren't patient and cancel their accounts instead... it seems Mweb are bottlenecked at their IPConnect level with Telkom's ADSL network, rather than their own international Seacom link (which explains why you're being shaped for local news protocols etc). Telkom are not making any modifications to their network at the moment, so I doubt you'll see any improvements until a little while after the World Cup completes... but once it's over, then assuming Mweb follow the logic and allocate more IPC bandwidth, uncapped should really start taking over the market like never seen before :)
 
ok so lets say I'll cancel my mweb subscription at the end of the month...which ISP must I consider? I read that Openweb has some nice uncapped packages, are they any good...or at least better than mweb?

Considering the regular problems Mweb are experiencing, and have been for months, I believe it is only working because of the Telkom link. Without it, we would be in the dark.

Openweb is the same as MWeb. They are in partnership AFAIK.
 
Axxess Uncapped Express would probably be the cheapest uncapped offering that can be used for mass P2P/downloading.
I think that Mweb is actually doing a pretty good job of limiting the NNTP traffic to like 5kB/s MAX during office hours. I can still max out my line in the early morning with my download scripts :)

Yeah well sat3's reliability through Telkom seems far better at the moment than Seacom's via Neotel (Mweb depends on Neotel's gauteng-kzn fibre link to the Seacom landing station), but yeah I wasn't referring to the international bandwidth in particular, but rather referring to the potential bottleneck of Mweb's link into Telkom's ADSL network at the ESR router level... chances are they've been limited far beyond what their network would be capable of - so ALL the bandwidth that ADSL users in the country could potentially use through Mweb, is ultimately bottlenecked by the size of the pipe Telkom has allocated from the ESR to their network, and Telkom's current limit in this regard is currently not sufficient for an ISP to offer this type of service without implementing QoS
Granted though, it does seem ironic that Telkom's reliability seems superior when you check the latest news about Seacom's... but the reality is that Telkom is still the primary inhibitor here

That's one of the reasons I ask people who are complaining to post a tracert, and not just automatically blame MWeb.

In many cases the bottleneck is either at their exchange (contention raio), CT-Jhb Telkom link (since MWeb's traffic is centralised), or MWeb local interconnects via Telkom (not relevant on SEACOM or JINX-TENET).

In each of these scenarios the congestion (or breaks) are outside MWeb's control. In very few isolated cases has the problem been MWeb's internal network (or gateway interfaces).

The ulimtate long-term solutions are local-loop-unbundling (or equivalent), and free open local peering:

I've got astraweb on my list as well...

astraweb does look less complicated, as you don't have to manage storage space online as well...simply click and download...nice :D

Guys I really wanna thank everyone who's commented so far, honestly didn't expect so much helpful info so soon after my first post, thanx!!!

Just one last question tho...

I'm considering 2 packages atm...the 384 express from Axxess, and the after hours unshaped from Openweb...they're both roughly the same price (R900ish), and from the looks of it roughly does the same thing (limited speed during the day, full unshaped speed after hours and weekends)

Does anybody here use any of these accounts? What are the pings like? I would like to still play stuff like COD4 and BFBC2 with "normal" pings.
