I recently bought my first place in port elizabeth, a flat on the 6th floor (top floor). I then got voted onto the board of trustees for our block & learned that we hav 2 cell phone towers on our roof almost directly above my flat. 1 for Vodacom & one for CellC. Since we are getting rent for these I didnt really think much of it as it helps reduce costs of maintenance for the owners.

MTN have now approached us & they want to go ahead with a tower for them as well. I decided to do a quick search about the dangers of the radiation & am now VERY worried.

See just one link with some worrying info:

Just a small extract-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regular exposure to radio frequency radiation may interfere with the electrical fields of our cells. Common health challenges that have been linked to regular exposure to radio frequency radiation include:

* Abnormal cell growth and damage to cellular DNA
* Difficulty sleeping, depression, anxiety, and irritability
* Childhood and adult leukemia
* Eye cancer
* Immune system suppression
* Attention span deficit and memory loss
* Infertility

Children are at much higher risk than adults of experiencing health problems related to regular exposure to radio frequency radiation; thinner and smaller skulls translate to greater absorption of radio frequency.

My main concern is that my wife fell pregnant just before we moved here. After reading what potential harm I may be doing to my unborn child I almost feel like I need to move which I cant really afford to do.

Can anyone please help provide me with any info with regards to this? Thanks in advance.

I know my dad and grandfathers flats have that above them(grandfather for 20 years now) and they have had no porbs ever... think it may be with older towers or just a mith?

Telkom cables has been stolen about three weeks ago. Since then we had no telephone or adsl connections. Is there a solution for this problem. Something wireless. It is so frustrating without internet.

Didn't see that coming. :confused:

Back to the cell towers. Well does your wife use a cell phone ever? Does she press it right up against her head when she does use it? Do you own a microwave oven? Is it serviced and checked for leaks every 12 months?

I wouldn't really worry, I mean we are constantly being bombarded by radio frequecies and electrical and magnetic fields that I don't think they could do a proper study on the effects of a cell tower being that close to you. Besides if your lighty comes out with 12 fingers, teach him to play piano. :D

I do think there's a fallout range, or dead-spot on those towers and im pretty sure directly underneath them would be a sort of dead spot?

If it still worries you, google for a radio/EMF testing company in your area and ask them to come out and test the signals in your house, they will advise if its dangerous or not.

You probably have a steel reinforced concrete roof. In addition, the antennas are optimised to transmit maximum signal at an angle just beneath the horizon and definitely not downwards towards you! You may even find the signals from the towers on the roof to be quite weak, especially on the bottom floor. I'd be more worried if I was living in a block of flats right next door.

The advantage of having a strong signal from the tower is that your phone will always transmit minimum power - about 0.02 Watt on GSM 900. (The max is 2 W). If you want to be cautious, keep your (pregnant) wife's talktime on the cell to a minimum.

Insulate your roof! You can deflect the signal away from the house.

Research materials which block signal penetration.

people are so concerned that they gonna turn green, thats mainly what leads to delays in setting up much needed towers, ah well.
