So my Xbox 360 and IBM X60s are up for sale and I am going to buy a Mac.

My budget won't extend as far as a brand new Macbook Pro...so my options are either a brand new Macbook or a Second hand Macbook pro. The obvious benefits of going brand new is Leopard, Warranty and opening the box, but I would prefer to have the more powerfull machine. If I get one that's less than a year old, is it possible to extend the warranty? I know you can do it overseas.

One other question - what are the built-in laptop speakers like on the macbook and macbook pro? Decent? Are they the same or is the pro better?

Here's to many more stupid questions I am going to have about my first mac. Wish me luck selling my stuff!

The built in speakers in the MBP is very decent ... obviously not having a piss-up party loud decent, but can provide sound to quite a big open plan office.

Not too sure about the warranty though ... give Apple IMC a call maybe?
 
Ye, I'm not looking to have a party on the machine - just listen to some tunes while working or something!

You still have your MBP? I've been dreaming about it...haha.
 
The speakers on the pro are streets ahead of those on the mb. The MB speakers are good for listening to music while you are working at the computer but not much else. The pro speakers, well on the 17" at least, are loud enough for other people in the office to complain.

I am quite sensitive to noise and like my sound at just the right volume. The other thing is that I have found that the headphone volume on the pro is much louder than on the MB.

I can attest to that, the Macbook's speakers are really ****. You can only hear them properly if there is no other sound source in the room i.e. tv or radio in the background. I use headphones if I look at TV/movies - sound is overpowering using headphones.
 
great decision there mate. if you're buying the macbook then make sure it is the latest revision with the santa rosa chipset and graphics. it was updated few weeks back but not sure if apple sa have the new models. i'm totally satisfied with my macbook and leopard.

Go for a new Macbook. Wait until after January also. A bump in performance/design might happen.

They just updated it at the beginning of the month - there's an average cycle of 199 days on the MB so another update in Jan might be expecting too much.

Was the update the 2.16Ghz processors on the macbook 13"?
 
Damit it drives me mad how websites in SA are not updated.

I was in the apple store in Sandton today, but they want R13000 for presumably the same thing ZAstore wants R11 800 for. I will phone ZA store and check that I will get the 2.2 GHz model if I order from them.
