How do you connect a Macbook to a 24" iMac (5 years old).

Presumably for the hard drive and not the screen?
You'll need a cable that fits both of them via either Thunderbolt or Firewire.
Then start the iMac up while holding "T" and it will throw a nuclear type sign on the screen.
The HDD will swow up on the Macbook and you can then either manually copy what you want or image the entire drive with Disk Utility.
