Imagine a world without guns

I agree he is not going to dismantle the gun on the spot, thief will go the easiest option which is to just put it in a metal bag, Then take it to a buddy that knows what they are doing to get the tracker removed.

Seriously a gun is not big, by design they are portable and small. Putting a gps receiver and some comms equipment/ antenna/ battery in them is possible in only one place, the hand grip.

As for making the gun difficult to turn off, not so much, find the battery snip a wire and you are done. And how do you find the battery ? disassemble the gun, from the point that you put the gun on an electric charger trace the wires to the tracking circuitry.

technology is becoming better, everything is becoming smaller. maybe one day the emitter, battery and casing can all be in one?

secondly, how do they know that the gun they've stolen has a tracker or not? they could end up dismantling a gun only to find no tracker. if someone steals 5 guns, and it's 5 minutes to dismantle a gun, that is 25 minutes to take apart all those guns, which is enough time to find a spot that the criminal has been standing in.

anything that makes something harder to steal is a plus. you already get guns that read palm prints, but that doesn't help when you don't know where the guns go

If there weren't any guns in the world we'd be having this discussion over swords, spears and clubs.

People have been killing each other since the days rocks were considered a handy & efficient head-bashing tool.

Maybe one day, still need breakthroughs in battery technology.

Easy to know if a gun has a tracker, tracking circuitry needs power, if a gun has any way of connecting to a charge, then assume it has tracking circuitry.

Your assumption that you have any time to locate it is misplaced, to foil any tracking simply carry some tin foil with you, simply wrap the gun in tin foil, now go to a underground parking garage, all the time in the world to disable the tracking circuitry.

anything that makes something harder to steal is a plus. you already get guns that read palm prints, but that doesn't help when you don't know where the guns go

This does not make it harder to steal, it does not even make it harder to use, it just adds extra cost.

Wrap the thing in tin foil, when you want to shoot someone just push your finger through the tin foil over the trigger and pull ! You do not even have to bother to disable the tracking circuitry then.

the problem here is not weapons, it is the distribution of weapons, who to hold responsible for illegal weapons, why people need more advanced weapons than are necessary, and why these weapons are the weapons of choice to pyschopaths and criminals.

a mugger would rather shoot you than try drown you, just as a getaway car would be better than a getaway bicycle

I imagine a country free of weapons where peace and harmony is the order of the day. Then I imagine invading that country cause they won't expect it and will be defenseless.

QFT - People have been killing people forever and will forever. Guns don't kill people - People kill people. Want to stop the killing? Kill all people.

Oh you mean like Britain?
Actually a perfect example of how it is in fact impossible to completely eliminate guns and that trying to make them less available doesn't prevent violence because criminals and violent people who can't be bothered to get themselves a gun just use other weapons. Then they move onto further stupidity like going after knives and in fact anything the police decide is a dangerous weapon. Making criminals out of people for simply wanting to have something to defend themselves should they get attacked.

Imagine a world without guns?!?!

Really, someone is even trying to put that forward as being vaguely plausible? The knowledge is out there, you don't need to have a commercially made firearm to have a gun. I can make one at my home, yes it will be crude but it will still be a gun.

+1.

Although I do fancy the idea of becoming a police reservist and getting to draw my rapier and don my chain mail.

You are more likely to draw your pen and as for the chain mail its pretty heavy

You should apply though, its worth it

If I can not draw my rapier and utter "Batho Pele!", I do not want to join!
