I agree he is not going to dismantle the gun on the spot, thief will go the easiest option which is to just put it in a metal bag, Then take it to a buddy that knows what they are doing to get the tracker removed.
Seriously a gun is not big, by design they are portable and small. Putting a gps receiver and some comms equipment/ antenna/ battery in them is possible in only one place, the hand grip.
As for making the gun difficult to turn off, not so much, find the battery snip a wire and you are done. And how do you find the battery ? disassemble the gun, from the point that you put the gun on an electric charger trace the wires to the tracking circuitry.
technology is becoming better, everything is becoming smaller. maybe one day the emitter, battery and casing can all be in one?
secondly, how do they know that the gun they've stolen has a tracker or not? they could end up dismantling a gun only to find no tracker. if someone steals 5 guns, and it's 5 minutes to dismantle a gun, that is 25 minutes to take apart all those guns, which is enough time to find a spot that the criminal has been standing in.
anything that makes something harder to steal is a plus. you already get guns that read palm prints, but that doesn't help when you don't know where the guns go
