I was browsing the Imaginet page [www.imaginet.co.za] for some reason or another and what I found on the ADSL page was interesting

Please note: Telkom currently imposes a 3 gigabyte cap, or limit, on the total traffic sent and received over an ADSL line during the calendar month... But watch this space. Imaginet will soon be launching new ADSL services with higher caps

P.S:What is the deal with Imaginet and additional GB's?

Actually, if memory serves me correctly, Imaginet was one of the first major ISP's to challenge TELKOM's capping strategy when the caps were first implemented (for the first few months there were no caps enforced). Imaginet claimed to have a written agreement from TELKOM that they could offer an uncapped service. They continued to advertise and sell uncapped accounts for some time after the caps were implemented. Legal threats were made from both sides... don't know whatever came of this except for the fact that Imaginet ended up complying.

Lots of ISPs are waking up now to the fact that they can offer 3/6/9/12 etc GIG caps. It seems Telkom now allows VISPs to offer anything up to 30gig as a cap.

Sybawoods, I read there FAQ and apparently they challenged Telkom in court and won, so that's why they are about to have new offerings.

This is from their FAQ page:

Are there limits on the traffic?

Yes. But this is only temporary. Imaginet has fought with Telkom on your behalf over the imposed 3gb traffic cap, and won. Check back with Imaginet soon for a range of new ADSL offerings, including substantially increased traffic allowances (and maybe even uncapped!).

At the moment, however, there is a limit of 3gb imposed. What this means is that after you have used 3 gigabytes of traffic (to and from your PC) your connection will be put onto a limited network shared with everyone who has exceeded the limit. This will still provide fairly fast access to South African sites, but international access will be much slower. Check back soon.

Wonder how long we will have to wait for some more info...

:)

A mail I got in Answer From Imaginet

Hi Guys

Just thought this would be interesting to share with everyone this is a mail I revieved from them when I asked about the new caps and possibly new accounts.
"Our Managing Director is in the process of finalizing these packages and
will be releasing all the information in the very near future. I will ask
him to contact you directly with the new prices and products which we hope
to launch before the end of the month.
I will ask him to give you an idea of how the unshaped packages will work.
It is very exciting and we will be very competitive with our pricing so we
are also anxious to get the products to our customers. Please bear with us
for a short time and I will keep you informed of the latest developments."

I will mail them again and ask for an update but by the end of this month it should be interesting :)

Thx Hellhound!!

I hope they provide us with a pleasant surprise!!

:)

More info

Okay All the following information is based on feedback from Imaginet but THIS IS NOT FINALISED YET! They told me the following should be availible end of April.I have asked if they will have more expensive unshaped accounts and according to them they are looking into this. the prices are as follows:
( not final yet).
2gig : R228 p/m
4gig : R299 p/m
6gig: R399 p/m
9gig: R499 p/m
12 gig: R599 p/m
"The terms and conditions on these are as follows:
When upgrading, during the month, you will be charged the full price for the
new account, there is no prorata amount on these. Also when upgrading from 2gig to any of the others you will be charged for both accounts for that
month."

I hope this helps... :) I'll keep you guys informed but I think the next bit of news will be when they release the packages.

That's not too bad actually.
If you were to compare the cheapest 3gig ADSL at R230 per account :-

4gig : R230 p/m
6gig: R460 p/m
9gig: R690 p/m
12 gig: R920 p/m

The 12 gig is pretty good at R600

However, if this ISP is managing to get rates like this, the others will follow suit and who knows what Hellkom will bring to the table when they launch the 1gig service.

but is imaginet any good though??? I cant stand the 3 gb cap

Well after emailing them budgetadsl.co.za which seems to be a new bunch, they are going to offer a no frills service at R 228 pm for 3gb with top accounts ? The mentioned somewhere the first 50 ppl get the first month at R 200 on a 6 month contract, need to find that in one of there email to me.

I was with Imaginet on Dial-up.

The service was pretty solid.

EXCEPT for one weekend, my username got bugged so I couldn't log in (after 19h00 obviously)

I finally got through to them SUNDAY evening. Support just wasn't answering.

They promised that the support hours will be extended, so this might be solved now.

Dean (ie. wickedWeasel)...dude, you are always pushing your own company's services (ie. ODS) as if you "just discovered them"...
Its lame and just generally deceitful...

Firstly, I do own the voipforums, never knew that was a sin. do you see me punting on that site.

As for budgetadsl, I host there web site, which you very intellgently pointed out, I also host 800 other web sites does not always mean affiliation.

As for my signiture, I dont see anything wrong as I use them at home ? so please clarify your statement.

Lol,

It seems that whenever a new service pops up!! You can bring it to MyADSL to be scrutinized. Expect a flooding of WHOIS requests at first then a detailed cost breakdown!!

BUT, why not?? If you have nothing to be scared off then don't be!!

I use SAGATEWAY, costs R10 more, but I get 24/7 support

:)

A mate of mine said he wants to print Telkom toilet paper.. 2 ply nogals..

The blocks are half the size, twice as thin and you can only complete 1/10th of a wipe before it falls apart.. anyone interested?

Dean, I have no issue with you raising new services and companies - in fact its good to know...

it just seems that you tend to act like you've "just happened to stumble across them" when meanwhile you probably own/host the sites ;)

Peace...by the way, you better let BudgetADSL know that if the Imaginet prices floating around become a reality, they are gonna need to rethink their offering...a lil' price war never hurt anyone :)
