IMATE / HTC - What are your thoughts?

I have a 4 month old Imate that i've had non stop cr@p with and I just want to know if I got a rotten apple or if the whole tree is spoilt?:confused:

See my post regarding dropped calls on an HTC TyTN. Still trying to see if this is the phone or the network. Mostly I am happy with the phone but I have to reset it quite often (every other day or so) cause it starts to freeze up.

Also some of the menus seem a bit on the slow side. But I really like the keyboard and the internet browsing is often very useful. I think anyone who buys a phone like this has to realise that it is a compromise of functionalities and as such, it is NOT going to be the BEST phone AND the best diary AND the best messaging system etc. But as a package, I am still happy (2 months or so now).

By the way, there is a new upgrade for the ROM on www.leaf.co.za under the members section...
 
I'm almost sure the dropped call issue is addressed in AKU 3. Most people I know got around the call dropping issue by changing the band from automatic to GSM under start - settings - phone - band.

As an all-rounder I love the Tytn. The other bonus is that Leaf will be making a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 available in May this year which is awesome news for us techno junkies! :D

are you sure about the mobile 6.0 being an official ROM released ... Anyways in the MTN forum there is a huge iMate /TyTN thread .. sift through it and tyou will get a better indication as to whether the whole tree is rotten ..
from time to time you could get a Lemon no matter what it is you buy.

That's very cool but do you have to send it in or can they do it over the counter? I've booked my imate in for general repairs and it's been gone for 3 weeks already... :(

Well I just got my TYTN back from being repaired. Not so nice when you only have your phone for 2 weeks and it breaks for no good reason. I must say I never knew how much I liked the TYTN until it wasn't there. So happy to have my little brick back :)

You dont need to send your device in for a software update ... you can download the ROM and do it at home ...
what did you break on your phone?

I'd like to think that it was no fault of mine...:D

The memory card reader suddenly stopped working...:mad: My contacts list had strange font instead of the names that normally show up.:confused: The phone freezes up at least once a day (even when I did a fresh reset). :mad: The battery lasts for less than a day.:mad:
 
You need to be passionate about PDA phones before the HTC units will grow on you. I've had just about every single model from day one, currently on the TyTn but most people I know try them for a while and then go back to a 'normal' phone.

If you need a phone with some PDA-type capabilities, rather go for one of the Smartphones like a Nokia 9300.

However, if you need a PDA with phone capabilities, then the HTC units might be for you as you'll probably live with the quirks to get the PDA capabilities. I still use my JasJar a lot to track the forum, for example.

The TyTn is a true converged device, i.e. it can do anything. However it does not excel at any.....

But for my own needs, it's perfect. Qwerty keyboard and decent sized screen allows me to do all my comms while I travel and I can do all my Home Automation functions from it.

I always say, if you get to the point where, if you loose one single device; you're completely stuffed, then you've achieved true convergence. I'm pretty much there with my TyTn.
 
I have an i-mate K-JAM, and honestly couldn't do without it now. It does have it's own set of unique problems, but I think any similar device will probably also misbehave.

Anyone know where I can get the AKU 3 ROM upgrade for it? The ROM on the i-mate site seems to only be AKU 2
 
Wm 6.0 ROM's are out there ... but they are not official releases .. there are tons of "Cooked" ROM's .. i have used many of them and to date i havent bricked one device as yet ... bear in mind that these devices use expensive hardware and if you have an unofficial ROM on your device you will in fact void your warranty ... so if you do go that route make sure you have an original ROM just in case you need to send the device in for repairs ... cos it could be costly if you need a mainboard replaced ...

Thanks, I'll have a look at it. What do you mean by bricked? Can you advise as to where I can get hold of a wm6 rom that won't damage the device?
 
I wouldnt say there are specific ROM's out there that will brick your device ( turn it into a nice paper weight)
there is a very small chance that you can end up damaging the ROM chip itself.
