I am a newbie, so be gentle! :)

RPM told me a while ago about edge and I managed to get myself an imate kjam. Now don't get me wrong! it's a marvellous toy. However, all is not well...

For a start, various people told me about the icon changing whenever you have edge coverage. At the moment mine displays a G and when I surf, it still shows a G with arrows (indicating connection). Now... ummm..

HOW do I know when I have edge coverage? Cause that icon's never changed to an E yet, and trust me, I surf EVERYWHERE. Sandton to Auckland Park to Horizon, and everywhere inbetween!

Secondly... I am currently running the base 64Mb RAM it comes with and an MTN 3G sim. Would this affect the connection/connection speed?

Last question, and this is a tricky one for a complete communications idiot like me: I actually use it to chat with friends on MSN mostly. Now, I've tried the LAN at work, which i think is a 512 mbps line (hey be gentle!), I've tried Sentech, Iburst, and now this Imate, which, SUPPOSEDLY is running edge.

Fastest, most reliable connection so far? Ye olde MotoV3 running gprs VIA BLUETOOTH. The connections are all fast, but they all run for 2 minutes and just DIE, and then I start getting CLUMPS of messages coming through (supposedly bandwith shaping or something). Is it possible that I can sort out my "Edge" connection on the Imate NOT to do that?

Thanks Guys!

Good day,

Retsaot

I’m not that familiar with the phone in terms of if it shows E for edge or if it automatically looks for the strongest connection speed and connects you, will have to find that out from my Device manager, in the meantime you can use a cool program on the net to check your speeds to see if you’re actually getting EDGE or not – the program is called TCPIQ, the MTN 3G SIM shouldn’t have any effect on your connection speed at all. When you use your WLAN at work does it just not connect you at all? Have you been provisioned to access the company’s WLAN from your phone?

Hope this helps a bit will come back to you with the E not appearing on your phone if that’s normal or not.

Thanks for the quick response! At work, Im actually connecting via physical LAN (cat5 UTP). It's connecting to MSN, and STAYS connected. Thing is, after about two minutes the chat becomes... ..... .. ........ interruptedandthenallatonce! Like theres pauses in the transmission. I know this forum is not meant for LAN... but Im getting EXACTLY the same problem with Iburst, Sentech, and now the Imate. (Running Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition). Why I even brought this up, is that 1. The main reason why I took this phone was the MSN functionality on a presumably faster connection, and 2. Oddly enough, the problem only happens on anything FASTER than gprs... lol... wonder if I should dust off my old dial up modem!

I initially thought it could be a firewall problem, but its not. Firewall totally open, in fact, disabled. Could it be a bandwidth shaping issue? Maybe MSN traffic gets a low priority or something? If so, at least on my personal machines/connections, how could I go about fixing it?

Thanks, Dude!

Edge Indicator

Hi,

I little while ago I posted I link where you can download a tiny cab file that will change the G to an E when you are in an Edge zone.

I'm not copying the whole post as you can search for it. However here is the link:

Cheerio

May I suggest going to forum.xda-developers.com and checking out the Wizard forums. Specifically, search for Registry Wizard, or tweaks. Also try www.htcwizardweb.net on for size. The K-JAM (HTC Wizard) is an awesome toy - it just needs a bit of customising.

As for MSN, try www.agilemessenger.com - much better at connecting to MSN. There is also an update due from MS soon re: Live Messenger Mobile.
