A friend is going to get a Imate K-Jam. I have read the specs and it looks all good. My question is, what are the known issues while connected to VC in terms of data connections! Also how easily does it gel with windows when used for a dial up connection.
Thanks all.

If you set it up correctly, it works fine. Takes some fiddling to get all the different apn's, etc. correctly configured.

Remember the HSDPA (HTC tytn or i-mate JasJam) version has already been submitted for testing, so (hopefully) expect it by Xmas. I've already written Santa for mine :)

I need Vodacom MMS settings for the TyTN. Someone got it working?

I am more likely to get a lump of coal in my stocking ......... or likie the little boy that wanted a pony and got a road apple.

Okay, downloaded the file from leaf.co.za and it works!
:D

Just for interest sake, how did you know about Leaf? I bought my i-mate JAM from Vodacom. Neither the people at Vodashop nor the Customer Care line and their technicians could help me with the settings, so I had to find them out for myself.

The Leaf files were on my phone all along, on my internal storage card, cryptically named Click_Me_First.exe and Click_Me_Second.exe and nobody at Vodacom could tell me this!

I'm now on Virgin Mobile - who got my settings working in no more than 5 minutes.

If you got your i-mate from Vodacom and you booted it the first time, it'll install those cabs automatically. They're actually preloaded by the manufacturer.

If you fiddle the settings into oblivion (easy enough on these devices!), you can always do a hard reset and they'll re-install.

Actually they didn't - not when I bought my JAM and not when I had to hard-reset it later due to pocket outlook files becoming corrupted.

I bought my JAM from Incredible Connection on the day Vodacom made it available in SA (the local Vodashop hadn't received any stock yet). Incredible Connection told me they didn't know anything about the JAM or how it worked, so I took it to a Vodashop where they politely inquired as to what "that thing" was and whether it was, in fact, a cellphone. :D

I assume the confusion was sorted out some time after I had my GPRS up and running. I can assure you that's not the reason I switched networks, though.

iMate no longer supported?

Hi,
i just got off the phone with an SP that has been hounding me for the past couple of weeks to renew with Vodacom.
Up until a couple of days ago, i wasn't sure what phone to go for, but i finally decided to go with the iMate JasJam (i don't want the HTC TyTn).

So i tell the lady on the phone and she says that, apparently, Vodacom have sent out a notice that iMate will no longer be supported by Vodacom.
Is this true or was she just trying to put me off because they don't have that model? She had the other various 'recent' models, k-Jam, JaMin etc.

Thanks

Perhaps you are aware that HTC is the actual manufacturer of all iMate devices, and that iMate is just an OEM branding of the actual HTC devices, as such the JasJam and the TyTN are the same physical device, although there may be a custom iMate ROM involved...

Hi,

yep, i'm aware of the branding and ROM difference, which is what i also informed the lady.
I currently have the iMate PDA2K, which has served me faithfully, except for the stylus getting lost all the time, which is why i want to stick with iMate (not because i keep losing the styluses/stylii :)).

I was told [rumour?] that Leaf (the ONLY people who brought in I-mates up to now..) is actually loosing rights [or giving them up?] to distribute I-Mate . This is probably influencing everyone downstream....

Regardless, i don't see why one would prefer the i-mate over the HTC. HTC is the main source [OEM] , i-mate,qtek and a few others just rebranded the HTC stuff with some tweaks and so on. I'd almost say I-mate is like a Vodafone branded HTC. ;) . Only trouble i have with I-mate up to now is the lack of support, the ONLY people in this entire country who can fix an i-mate is LEAF..and i wasn't very impressed with them the times i dealt with them.....

Also due to this, accessories are always a mission to find and if you do, you are totally ripped off .

..so for this type of device [kinda complicated in other words] i would seriously look at who's going to support and fix the thing when deciding HTC or I-mate.

PDA shop in Pretoria can sort you out with your accessory needs .. as for pricing it is relatively on par with the rest of the world ...

Insync Mobile are now bringing the iMate in.
They have the phone available, but i was hoping to get the price cut a bit by renewing my contract with Vodacom.

As you state, HTC may have better support, so i will look at the Tytn again with that in mind and try and get ofve rthe sentimental stuff.

According to www.cacell.co.za the i-Mate Jasjam is selling for R8900 and the HTC TyTN is selling for R7900. I don't know why there must be such a big price difference. It's exactly the same phone. Just different branding.

i-Mate branded devices have always been more pricey than all the other devices
" Justified " by after sales service .. ie Club i-Mate with their online support and e-mail; facilities etc ...
