Hello,
I've been reading some pretty dated articles where people were complaining about the IMAX screen at Gateway saying it was heavily downgraded compared to traditional IMAX. I'm interested in watching Avengers Endgame there but am now wondering if that IMAX theater is really worth the extra rands they're charging.

Has anyone been there lately? How is it?

IMAX is digital now with smaller screens. Traditionally IMAX was a lot higher resolution with 70mm film and larger screens.

All IMAX cinemas in SA are digital. It's still a better experience than normal cinemas, but no where near as impressive as the old IMAX theaters from the 80's and 90's.

There are very few traditional IMAX theaters around the world.

The 3D for the small IMAX screens are different to the normal 3D, much less strain on the eyes and brighter, so it's worth it for some movies, but expensive, so I only go for the Star Wars movies.
 
I usually go to the Gateway IMAX. Much better experience than the normal 3D theaters. The screen is brighter and the images seem to be sharper. Sound is also great. Going to watch Endgame there!

It's not the same as the old IMAX. But it's a much bigger and brighter screen than a normal 3d movie. And the sound is amazing
 
Just saw avengers in IMAX at mall of Africa. So glad I did. Amazing clarity and sound. Too expensive though. Will only use it for big big movies
 
I watched End Game at Gateway Imax last Friday. Awesome screen and sound. Wife and I had one of the lovenest seats which a quite comfy too.
 
The screen and sound and everything is awesome, but I do wish they didn't call it IMAX since its not a stitch on the original IMAX experience...
