iMessage activation issue

It is very definitely an issue with Vodacom but they appear to be just ignoring it.
I dont know hey. Seems to be a lot of other people in other countries having same issues.

Seems switching back to a physical sim resolves it, but problem now is that the US model of the Iphone 14 only supports esim. No option for a physical sim. /eish.

I'm not using an eSIM so I suspect it's not the same issue. In almost all cases I have seen on this thread, it happens after restoring the iPhone, usually after getting a new one - not randomly.

It seems to be something around the SMSes on the contract. In some cases, on contracts that allow it (topup), you can add airtime and it works. On contracts such as mine (where I can't add airtime because topups aren't allowed) it never works even though the account is debited for the (international) SMSes that it's sending.

Yes, his is also a normal contract where international SMS's is billed to the account and goes off via debit order. His roaming and international dialling is also active.

I don't have an eSIM, but also experiencing this issue. It is the same Vodacom SIM that worked with with my previous iPhones. I'm also post-paid contract customer and can see the +44 SMS on my bill. The reply from Apple servers to activate never reaches me though. I've already spent several hours with both Apple and Vodacom on the phone, with no luck.

I'm seeing exactly the same. Very annoying...

Still an issue for me 7 months with a physical simcard after going overseas. Vocacom has zero interest in solving this.

Use your email for iMessage instead of number as a stop gap arrangement

I removed my number from WASPA and iMessage was activated instantly
This resolved it for my as well! It was not instant, though. I removed from WASPA on Thursday and it eventually activated on Monday. Thanks so much, @JSRJJ !

So still no luck anyone? My customer said we must wait for him to be back in SA and then delete his esim and reactivate a new one and sees if that solves it. I am not hopeful though /sigh

Check if he is on the WASPA opt-out list. I was, and removing myself off the list resolved the issue (albeit 3 days later).

I tried that now with my number but I dont get the SMS they say they sent? Checked under my messaging app spam folder also but there are just SABC messages.
The SMSs from WASPA came through immediately for me. I'm on Vodacom post paid contract.

Hi there, any other options, I check number was not on list.
Tried the following
Airplane mode off and on
iMessage and FaceTime off and on
Reset network settings
Signing out of Apple ID
Still no luck?

Do you have airtime available?
It wouldn't let me activate on a MTN contract as it had a certain allocation of minutes / data / sms's
Activation can't be done using those bundles apparently.

I bought R5 airtime and activated within minutes

I had the same issue. I think it’s because iMessage/facetime registration on networks without direct apple integration attempts to send an SMS to a UK number. For some reason, it doesn’t prefix the number with +, it just starts with “44” and when on a foreign roaming network they don’t like that and refuse to deliver it. I got billed for all those messages though. Someone should talk to apple. Maybe I’ll bring it up.

In other news: I just got a US iPhone 14 without pSim slot. How do I get a QR code for my vodacom contract number to activate the eSim. Vodacom official channels tells me to “wait until 2023” :/

You wait, Vodacom does not support eSIM on phones yet. Only MTN and Telekom currently support eSIM on phones.
