IMHO - Thats how you reply to this

I like openweb. It just gets annoying when all my other capped accounts are running at top speed and my openweb can barely manage 4KB's >_> Though usually an email to them gets it sorted out. But other than that, Im happy with my standard uncapped. Or was it lite.. Might be the lite. Either way. Im happy except when the speeds are.. yeah

This is odd because when I activated my Gold account, I was asked to pay a pro-rated amount into their account initially. Or is it that they can't pro-rate on debit orders only?

Anyway, I also had a "moment" with OpenWeb support, see this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/412382-OpenWeb-Gold-and-throttled
It was eventually sorted out, but I don't know if it would have been had I not posted on MyBB.

I also had an email discussion with the guys at Openweb, and they got very snarky. I'm with MWeb (as suggested by Keoma toward the tailend of that conversation:D ) and very happy.

Agreed. But why read the site when you specifically mentioned this to the founder?!

I'm sorry, but you signed up for a product without reading the full Terms of Service simply because you talked to the owner? You might want to revise your principles.

Also, just to clarify, as I'm not taking sides here. I've been on the ass-end of Openweb's snarkiness and poor email reading skills myself before, but

If the response was, “we don’t do pro-rata”, this entire episode would have been avoided.

Which isn't true. Yes, Keoma should have said they don't do pro-rata for debit orders, but if the OP had actually done his job by reading through the rules and ToS on the site instead of blindly signing up for a product, there wouldn't have been an episode either because the consumer would have have known how the company he is signing a debit order with works.

The ToS is not there as some optional light reading for when the consumer is bored. It's there to tell you what the rules and regulations regarding the service you're signing up for is. Seriously, in this day and age, how the hell do you sign up for something without at least reading the rules? At the risk of sounding insulting, that's the border between 'smart guy' and 'moron'.

Do you also sign contracts without reading through it at all?

I find it highly unfair that Openweb is being made out to be the bad guys when both parties are at fault.

I see the problem,it's pretty clear to me. You bought a service from openweb that's your problem.
Why even bother with a ISP that can't get it's billing system right so you must either wait until the start of a month or cough up extra to get it sooner?

Doest sound like much is done by them but rather through their upstream providers. I would rather go for a ISP that provides quality service and doesn't have the crappy attitudes when you deal with them. Afrihost and webafrica are both very good.

So you have read every TOS and Eula of every product that you have used?

You might want to check the Openweb uncapped feedback thread. Lots of satisfied peeps in there.

If it's something I'm going to use for a long time and have to sign a debit order for, yes. It's common sense for a consumer to read it so he knows what he's getting himself into.

Either way, I'm not here to defend Openweb, I'm here to point out consumer stupidity.

I'm happy with their service myself, but I'd like a complete overhaul of their billing system and I find their support severely lacking. If it wasn't for the fact that my uncapped account is basically a true uncapped account, something I'm never going to get from another ISP if I drop OpenWeb, I'd have left ages ago.

OP, you might actually have a case with the CPA. even though T&C were not read, a company employee who is authorized to speak on behalf of the company didn't dispute your request for pro rata, and based on your email conversation, that's why you went with the product. you could claim misled and false advertising.

I accept your critisism. And trust me, lesson learnt. But I still cannot get over the fact that I made specific mention to pro-rata and the direct response to that was "debit activated". And this was coming from the founder!

Is it really stupidity to accept a statement from a founder of a business without first reading their ToS? The short answer, as I've learned is YES. If OpenWeb would have at least admitted that they could see how it might have been confusing, we still couldve worked it out. You are right about me reading the ToS, but still....

OK I just thought of a good analogy. You come up to my house and stand at the gate. Theres a sign that reads "Beware of dog." You say "Please lock up your dog before I come in." Logical thing to say, imo. Thats what the majority of dog owners do so you dont think its a strange or unreasonable request. AND you are speaking to the owner of the house.

I open the gate and say "Come on in." Next thing you know, your A$$ is torn to shreds! You say wtf?! I say "we dont lock our dogs."

You say "but you opened the gate and said come on in???!!" I say "I didnt say I was locking the dog up!!!!!" :wtf::wtf:

I get what you saying about the ToS, but surely you can see why Im a bit peeved.. :) Anyway, its over now cause I cancelled.

Funny analogy :D

I would've cancelled too. Even though it looks like quite a good offer from their side, I wouldn't support a company that treats their customers like that.

What this is? I don't even.

This is why South Africans get taken for a ride time and time again. The question is simple, the answer is stupidly simple.

This is not toward the OP, but half the reply's in this thread. Question: Should I expect an employee, no scratch that, founder to do his due diligence? Answer: Nope, self service. Ask but don't expect an answer, why should he do what he is being paid for?

Oh and to the snarky comments to come, yes customer support, sales, petrol, phone bills, electricity, training is all included in your monthly fee and more.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I would probably have done the exact same was I in your position, as it was misleading on Keoma's part. It is well known that Keoma barely seems to read emails and makes such vague responses which is really beyond frustrating at times. I'm not defending him at all, just saying he's not the only one at fault. ;)

Unfortunately we live in a dog eat dog world. It's very important if you're signing any contract to know exactly what you're getting yourself into, so that you always know what you're signing up for and know what your rights are the moment things go south.
