Immigrating to the UK

Found a couple of gems for you
Haha not as bad up North but you still want a good £400k for a family home in a nice area.

Aye 400k gets you a very nice detached up here. Have seen some stunners while looking for a place to aim for.
I'm not quite that fortunate in Manchester - it's an expensive place to buy, but the property bubble seems to be bursting somewhat so who knows...

The wife and I love London. We go there as often as we can.

Went to see The Lion King in theater. What an experience. High recommend.

London is cool to visit, I wouldnt want to live there, and if i did, i would need a lot of money

Talking of rentals. Would I need a credit history in the UK to get a rental?

My wife has one. But I’ll be paying the rent from my salary.

That would be problematic.

I got a rental without a credit history but they do a check on you that returns something like inconclusive. But I also agreed to pay 6 months in advanced. They are strict with right to rents, so if you can't provide that you'll be rejected immediately.

You can probably get it on your wife’s credit history (if she’s working). Where the money comes from for the rent is irrelevant - you’ll set up the standing order usually anyway. Most important thing is that you’re both employed.

I was in a sticky situation where I was made redundant and at the same time our landlady had some breakdown and wanted to move back into her place and gave us 2 months notice. We’d signed our 3rd lease just a few months earlier…

Anyway, finding a new place was a nightmare, because even though I had a fat bank balance thanks to my redundancy payout, no agencies would touch us because I didn’t have proof of employment. So, instead of taking a few months off to unwind and relax, I had to scramble to get back into the job market.

I can echo what @2023 said, basically every single rental I looked at wanted some history, I also had to offer 6 months in advance.

Thanks all.

And how long did it take to find a rental?

At the price range we need to rent I don’t think 6 months rental will be possible.

But my wife has a very good credit history in the UK - so we will just have her name on everything.

The other issue might be that she would have to be earning a certain amount to get a rental.

We are looking at places in the 2k mark. Due to needing a 3 bed place with a garden. Seems you can’t find much if you spend less than that.

What areas are you looking at?

There are loads of affordable areas, if you can be flexible with location

The whole of East Sussex pretty much. Family stay in Hastings. So we don’t want to be more than an hour from there.

I can't speak for you area and hopefully I don't dishearten you but up north it took me about 5 weeks. I have a spreadsheet of places I'd gone to see...

It's just crazy getting a place to rent. Perhaps having no credit history worked against me, but it was frustrating.

We got a rental without credit history history, but they wanted 6 months payments up front as deposit

@Dave

Not sure if I mentioned it, but the wife and I bought a house back in June :)

Also, screw this sun setting at 4:15pm.
