Immigrating to the UK

I am glad my work pays for most of our initial fees though, the only thing coming out of our pockets is my wife's visa fee, but the work offers a interest free loan for that if we want it...

So far they've covered:

* My visa & IHS cost
* Initial set up in UK (one months pre tax salary for things like temp rent, airplane tickets etc.)
* Moving of animals, and household items from SA to UK

Saving a **** load of money come to think of it
How many years did they pay upfront?

To be fair; the Tories said they want to cut immigration then let everyone in from Ukraine. So that’s partially why figures are sky high.

Ukraine is way down the list of countries, the EU has been replaced by black/brown countries and is enough to give most brexiteers apoplexy when they realise.

The top five non-EU nationalities for long-term immigration flows into the UK in the YE December 2023 were Indian (250,000), Nigerian (141,000), Chinese (90,000), Pakistani (83,000) and Zimbabwean (36,000) (Table 1).

Since 2019, the number of Indian, Nigerian and Pakistani nationals arriving in the UK has seen the largest increase.

Thanks for the info. Will be interesting to see if the new rules made a dent in those numbers a year from now.

Will have to do more digging to find out how it’s even possible, but ONS stats put around 58% of people here on work visas earning just over minimum wage. Only thing I can think of is care work, but I know that it can pay quite well, so not sure.

The cynic in me notices that 3 out of the top 5 countries are from the Commonwealth, so are allowed to vote in UK elections. Only problem for the Tories who’ve let them in is that they’re probably not going to vote for them.

It happens, obviously. But the numbers are very low. The Tories made it out to be a much much bigger issue than it really is, because that's the hill Sunak decided to die on.

It's hardly the dream you imply it is. These people's lives are in pure limbo and uncertainty. They live in shitty accommodation. Cannot really work legally, do anything a normal citizen can. And they face deportation should their case not be successful - which takes years to be heard.

So no, it's not an option for people who have no claim to asylum to just get on a boat.

Skilled Worker Visa. My company is sponsoring it and provided the necessary documents etc.

I'm going to do biometrics in a couple hours.

Problem is that recent stats showed that the majority of people (read: single young men) coming over on boats were from Albania. They have no asylum rights, so probably just plan on going to find their mates who are already here.

Definitely plan on getting ILR, not sure about plans after that or how long it takes for the next step

We got ours then chilled for a couple of years before applying for citizenship. Once you have ILR there’s no real rush.

Yea ILR is the main goal at the moment.

It seems like you can apply for citizenship quite soon after:

You can usually apply for ILR after you’ve lived in the UK for 5 years.

To apply for citizenship with ILR you must usually have lived in the UK for 12 months after getting it.
