Immigrating to the UK

For those of you that are on spousal/family visas, or your partner is on one.
On a 5 year plan, when do you renew?
My understanding was that the first visa is valid for 30months from issue and you can start renewal from 28day before that 30 month period ends.
Agent says renewal can be done 28 days before the BRP expires but I’m not feeling confident about this.

Start the renewal process within 28 days of the BRP expiring.
They will only add 28 days of "current" validity to the new one. So going too early means you may not have enough time in UK to apply for IRL when the 2nd one expires. Then you need to pay for a 3rd one.

Once your application is in, your BRP expiry is suspended until a decision is made, so it stays valid till your new one is ready.

Thank you very much. That puts my mind at ease.

Reading to London is probably the most expensive commute, mile for mile.
Rather move to somewhere in Hampshire, Surrey or West Sussex. Also much prettier than Reading! :D
Or even Aylesbury or surrounds...

I dont have much to compare it to, but during peak it costs me £55 return, which is madness.
The after hours or weekends is not too bad with the railcard, but I wouldnt be able to afford daily travel to london.

My first job was a WFH contract and they paid anytime I had to go in, was sheer luck I got this as i didnt factor travel would be that bad.

Yup all applications made within the UK grant the applicant section 3C leave. Which allows them to remain in the UK until a decision has been made.

Procrastinate much?

Right after that post; we had our honeymoon and wedding ceremony in US / Santorini. Then bought a house in SA and didn’t think about it again until our son was born two years ago.

You know that comment was in jest, right?

You guys who moved over; any of you keep your SA banking accounts open? I’m considering keeping my FNB account open and closing my Investec account as it’s more expensive.

Kept my FNB account open because I was waiting for an inheritance payment. Transferred everything over, and then the bank just closed the account a couple of months later due to inactivity. Didn’t see the point of keeping it open anyway, so just let it happen.

Dont close it immediately.

In my case I still travel to SA from time to time and have access to FNB CC
Having access to credit might also be useful while you still building credit in the UK

I still have my Capitec and Tyme accounts open.
I am still paying off a loan I have with Capitec, and I send money back into my SA account to pay maintenance and to give my mom some cash.

I’m going to keep it open for now.
