Immigrating to the UK

Yeah so thankfully it has other been made any harder for you @AstroTurf

Getting B2 on the English thing is easy if it's your native language or 2nd Language I think.

Had a read through the papers.

Looks like I am screwed as it affects SWV and extending the time to 10 years. And this is retroactive.

The problem is there is nothing stopping them from increasing it whenever they feel like it. So they could increase it to 15 years in a few years time.

Will discuss with the wife. Maybe its time to start applying back in SA.

watched a documentary of a crime ring hiring like 10 "chefs" as a kebab shop to get exploit the skills workers visa....

And the butchery that’s hired over 900 butchers from Pakistan in the last 3 years.

They don't say this anywhere.

Just thinking out loud, making you pay for 5 years of visa charges then telling you to fsck off seems crazy to me
Its written in the amendments.

Page 12 (para 11) of the Technical Annex of the White Paper suggest that the changes to the qualifying period for settlement will be retrospective

"For those cohorts affected by the increase in the standard qualifying period for settlement to ten years visa demand is likely to fall, as some will be deterred from coming to the UK as a result of the longer time to settlement. Also, a number of those currently in the UK are likely to leave due to it taking longer to gain settled status." https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6821b49bdb6463b14cd8189c/restoring-control-over-the-immigration-system-technical-annex.pdf

Yeah, I don't think that means what you think it does. This is not law and these are just proposals. Wait until it's clarified and gone through parliament - which it still needs to do so and be voted on and then enacted into law.

I most definitaly would not be making life changing decisions based on a proposal... but you do you.

yea, logically it doesn't make sense.

Imagine you dont have a degree but you have been working on a skilled workers visa for 3 years and now you have to leave due to new laws.

I think changes will only affect new applications.

Yes, that makes the most sense.

I mean it could take up to a year.

As per the previous post. It affects everyone

No, it does not. You'd realize this by what I posted earlier, except you have me on your ignore list.

You’re missing the point that this is only a white paper, all sorts of changes will happen before it goes anywhere near becoming legislation.

They miss a lot and make life choices based on proposals and white papers...

yup, I can almost certainly pass the higher grades as well.

Constant writing to MP's and news outlets has honed my English skills over the past year.

Also, only a 7 day drive.

Yea SWV changes will 100% be for new applications only as they've been in the past, but the ILR (earned settlement) changing to 10 years is confusing. It's not clear whether it applies to people currently on that path or just new applicants either.

They’ve stated for people on family visas will remain on the 5yr path, thankfully. I think the same will be for SWV.
