Immigrating to the UK

Had considered moving back to the UK with the missus and the kids but we’ve just returned from a couple weeks in the states and we’ve all decided we’d prefer it there.

Indeed, I like Florida.

I suppose anywhere where you feel safer in your home is better than here.

Sounds very stressful.

Forgive my ignorance, but how did the children get placed with you without the government resolving the birth certificate issue?
They were in a children's home from birth, the eldest was placed with us when he was 3 as he was getting to big for the place he was at and it was either finding him a family or placing him in another children's home where he would most likely have stayed until he turned 18. It's very difficult for child services to place older kids. He's now 9.

His biological sister was placed with us in November last year at the age of 4 and was also in the process of being transferred to another children's home for older kids.

The eldest one does have a birth certificate. The Foster care order does not require social services to have a birth certificate to get the Foster care order granted.

Currently there are ads placed in some newspapers to trace the biological parents and inform them of the impending adoption. This has been running for a month now and needs to run for one more month. Next would be to get a recommendation from the western Cape government department of social development to recommend that they are adoptable and that we are the preferred adoptive parents. Then we need to get a court date where the social worker will present the case and recommendation and the judge will then hopefully grant the adoption order. I then need to submit the adoption order to home affairs to issue new birth certificates with my wife and I listed as the parents.

SA is a signatory to the Geneva convention for adoptions which means that we can register the adoption in the UK and her them British birth certificates as well and then British passports.

They are pretty good. I've started selling some stuff on eBay (UK) and a lot of deliveries get there next day.
I don't think I would trust any of our courier companies to deliver a pot plant, never mind the post office.

Miniature Rose plant in a pot with strawberry bonbon and lemon crisps delivered with the post office.

Turns out my great grandmother on my father's side was born in Scotland but I think ancestral visa stops at grandparents.

My great grandfather was born in St Helena.

Would have been easier and cheaper to get the UK ancestral visa than the spouse visa.

Well North Yorkshire is amazing already and I only got here on Friday!

Uk mortgage was approved but the deposit required makes it a stretch. Was budgeting for a 10%(£22k) max deposit on a mortgage of £220k. Only an 85% mortgage was approved which means we would needed about £33k for the deposit plus the solicitors fees.

Interest rate offered is:

39 months at 2.39% (£853.86)
24 months at 4.25% (£1 013.44)
225 months at 4.99% (£1 075.66)
24 year term

@signates I appreciate these practical living type posts

Feedback from the agent is that the lack of a UK credit record was the reason for the higher deposit requirement. Not being on the electoral roll also had an impact. Already received confirmation that her name will be included in the local electoral roll on 1 August. We are also trying to apply for a cellphone contract to get the credit record activated.

The seller has agreed to wait until middle of August to see if the mortgage provider will reassess the deposit amount after the inclusion in the electoral roll and if she gets a cellphone contract in her name. Already found a potential rental unit in the same building where she wants to buy with the exact same layout for £1 100 per month.

Mortgage was approved with Accord Mortgages. They do not take direct applications and must be done through a broker. We were impressed with offer considering the fact that they were prepared to finance the property with our circumstances. No other lender was prepared to even consider our situation.

Some reviews we found online.

Agency we are using is William H Brown. Also good service received from them.

If the deal does fall though we will most likely go back to them for a future property purchase.

Come now Brexit, it’s time that we crack on now.

A friend of mine is over there and said the easiest one is to get a sim card only contract from the network Three. The credit check was supposed to be more relaxed than other networks and much easier than a contract with a phone included .

Thanks for this. We will try them. Tried Vodafone and O2 sim only contact at £11 per month and was declined on both.

We went to Carphone Warehouse - they can check all the networks to see who gives you a deal. But yeah, get used to the "not here for 3 years yet, sorry" nonsense. It's their standard response because of the UK being a money laundering hotspot apparently.
