Immigrating to the UK

Registered to Vote to help my credit score and now got a poll card for the 12/12 General Election with my register number and voting station details. Does one just need to be on the voters register so they can be found by financial institutions or do I need to make a point of also voting

Think it's just being on the roll that counts toward credit score ….... but, if you're registered, go out and vote anyway

Voting isn't compulsory, for your credit file the important thing is being on the electoral roll.

My wife's been on the voters roll for just over 3 months now and clearscore still can't pick up anything on her. I think they list equifax credit records.

She's also has her cellphone contract for a while now, moved into her own place and have council tax, water and electricity accounts on her name. I check every month to see if they have anything yet. Screenshot_20191117-215446_Chrome.jpeg

Correct. It basically serves as a proof of residence for people searching your credit record. So it's also important to update it as soon as you move again.

So... the wife and I are considering buying a place in central London, since we already spend a few months a year there, and aren’t fans of the long term hotel and/or corporate housing living we’ve been doing.

We will almost certainly go for a flat since it needs to be lock up an go (will be empty 9 months of the year). The purchase would be cash.

Any gotchas one should be aware of? We will definitely get something in a security block to avoid squatting issues (not sure if that is still a thing?). I will set up a WiFi cam anyway. I believe there is a stamp price that has to be paid. Council tax, building levies, etc. We assume these can be paid online out of a US bank account or credit card.

Yup

Thanks, its as I suspected. Currently a roaming techie, at home on occasion but going to make every effort to vote, mainly interested in the experience.
Find it interesting that Common Wealth Citizens, Resident in the UK are allowed to vote in the General Election...

Central London for 2nd mostly idle property with no intention of using it as an income generator paid in cash? WOW! That's multimillionaire territory... What do you and you wife do for a living if you don't mind me asking?

Yup

Yeah is a bit odd, as EU citizens aren't allowed to. I've voted in every election in the last four years (first year I voted 3 times).

I do algorithmic trading (software/maths primarily), and my wife was a teacher, but is now a perpetual student. :)

Its definitely a buyers market right now, especially London and its surrounds. After almost a year my credit record is slowly shaping up, hoping to be in a position to buy a place early next year but out in Berkshire, I can only dream of owning bicycle storage in Central London :p

Interesting that you say it’s a buyers market. It looks like the sales prices have been going up in the areas I’ve looked at seem to be going up (Islington, City of London, Shoreditch, Camden, possibly Belgravia). Perhaps today, single digit increases means a buyers market :)

Any thoughts on how Brexit will affect property prices?

Good luck on your future purchase!

There has been a slight decline in property prices over the past couple of years (starting in central London), but London property has always been resilient to a downturn. However, with the loss of financial equivalence, it is expected that London will become largely irrelevant in world finance which should keep prices stagnant for a while. There will always be dirty Russian and Chinese money propping up the top end of the market though.

*EU citizens from Malta, Cyprus and the Republic of Ireland can vote.

;)
Pfft, they don't count those anyway.

Edit: and definitely not in referendums.

Double edit: a Lithuanian friend just told me she gets sent reminders in the post to vote from her local council as she's on the voter's role - listed as Lithuanian?!
