Immigrating to the UK

London, Manchester, Liverpool or Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness or Cardiff, Swansea ,Newport. even Dublin ,Galway, Cork or Belfast, Lisburn or Newry.

Oh, are you looking for a more specific location? As mentioned, North England and Scotland. So that would be around Manchester/Leeds/Liverpool areas instead of South (London) as it seems very expensive the south part of England

Do we have similar threads for those immigrating to other non-UK countries?

Scotland will be better, Great people, always heart warming and welcoming especially if you are not Scottish.
Scotland is absolutely amazing. The scenery, people etc. I was in Edinburgh for a long weekend few weeks ago. Be warned, the weather is hond kak tho. Hot, then cold, then blizzards rain, then the sun comes out. That x5 then its 10am.

So South Africa without loud shedding then but with blizzards...

Geez, sounds like another mud island.

You need to prove right to rent, which is pretty trivial. We also had to pay 6 months of rent up front on account of lack of credit history.

Did you do this while still in SA using your passport to prove right to rent or did you go across first into something like bnb and then prove the right to rent?

Also, did you have to give UK bank account statements?

Was lucky to have a friend here who mentioned us to the main property guy in this town and we got in with no upfront rent or credit record. Was a lifesaver

There's a government website which gives you a code to share with landlords, which states right to rent. Obviously this is if you are on a visa. If you're a citizen, not an issue.
They didn't care about bank account statements for me, on account of the prepayment for six months. It's dependent on the landlord though, from what I can tell.

Further to the home searches for anyone looking try:

openrent.co.uk
rightmove.co.uk
zoopla.co.uk

Also try Facebook groups such as "Saffas in UK" or "South Africans in the UK" - loads of house share options advertised here, it might be a good point to get a foot in the door.

Try avoid agencies as you will need to jump through a lot of compliancy hoops, and chances are you will get involved in a bidding war.

If you have any family or friends in the UK leverage off these relationships to get key contacts. This is going to take some effort, and by that I mean you going to have to pick up the phone and jump to view properties instantly when they become available.
Sending emails to ads is a waste of time.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'm feeling a little more comfortable with he plan to move now.

Is it possible to visit EU on holiday (like a weekend) and then return to UK easily or is it a pain/risky because you'd have to use your South African passport?

When you get here on a residence visa you will receive a biometric residence permit. This together with your SA passport will let you straight back into the UK no problems.

This ^

Just apply for a Schengen visa when you arrive then you can pop over to the EU. I just spent 3 days in Barcelona no issues. The only drawback if you need to go stand at the "other passports" queue at the airport and they can be quite long
